Environmental Destruction [ Being Environment-Friendly ]

Global Environment and Waste Issues
Deforestation and Loss of Biodiversity

  • The world has lost nearly 200 million hectares of tree cover;

  • Deserts are being expanded by some 120 million hectares;

  • Thousands of plant and animal species are disappearing quickly;

  • Some 1.6 billion people were added to the world's population;

  • The world's farmers lost an estimated 480 billion tonnes of topsoil, roughly equivalent to the amount of India's crop land;

  • In addition, billions of tonnes of wastes have been dumped into the environment each year.

The root cause of Environmental and Waste Problems:

  • High dependency on non-renewable fossil fuels;

  • Exploitation of renewable resources which are being used faster than nature can regenerate;

  • Carelessness in discarding wastes which pollute soils, rivers, oceans and the atmosphere faster than nature can self-clean;

  • It has led to unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, as well as increased the quantities and variety of wastes at unprecedented rates;

  • The model of economic progress used by the highly developed countries of Europe and North America is unsustainable.

  • Mass production/consumption results in mass generation of waste
    People can't be forced to eat more ... but they can be made to pay more through processing and packaging!
