Minimizing Waste [ Singapore Waste Statistics ]

Solving the Waste Problem
Minimizing our waste output will:

  • Save natural resources.
  • Save energy and create less pollution.
  • Protect the natural environment.
  • Help our communities.
  • Prolong the life span of our landfill.
  • Did you know?

In 1998, we disposed 2.84 million tonnes of rubbish (about 7,800t/day)
This means that they would occupy:

    1. 350 football fields if stacked to an average man's height (1.7 m)
    2. 1,100 refuse trucks full of rubbish a day.
We are projected to be generating 10,000 tonnes per day in 5 years time!
    What We Can Do
Prevention is better than cure! Here are some things which we can do to minimize our waste output:

    1. Conduct a home waste audit, and minimize waste output accordingly based on the findings of the audit
    2. Be a smart shopper
    3. Avoid fast food -- have a "green" picnic or party
    4. Recycle as many things as you can
    GNP grew 10% annually (1970 - 1994)
        Waste output increased 278% (1974 - 1998)

Over the past 20 years, our total solid waste grew at an average rate of 6.4% a year.
If this trend continues, we are projected to be generating 10,000 tonnes per day in 5 years time.
The waste problem relates to the way we live and the things we consume -- WE are RESPONSIBLE.
Take waste minimisation action -- The SOONER THE BETTER!
