Singapore drone frees your fingers to take photos

As more people shoot pictures and videos from consumer drones, researchers in Singapore have found a way round the frustrating task of framing and taking photos while manually piloting the craft. The researchers from the National University of Singapore say their prototype, based on a Parrot Bebop quadcopter, relies mainly on a single monocular camera and works reliably even when there is no GPS signal.

Meet Nipun Bhatia – the man whose algorithms power the pricing on Walmart.com

Nipun Bhatia, built the pricing platform of Walmart.com from ground up. He is now the Chief Technology Officer of Magicpin. Bhatia did an internship at NUS School of Computing and worked on Computer Vision, specifically in detecting motion under water. The new experience and exposure he got made him realise that engineering was not just about going from point A to B -- there are open-ended problems as well.

Quantum Computers Pose Imminent Threat to Bitcoin Security

Research by Assistant Professor Divesh Aggarwal and his colleagues have estimated that quantum computers might be able to break bitcoin's security as early as 2027. Bitcoin encrytion today is ensured by the difficulty of cracking its code using existing computers, but quantum computers will be able to work much faster because they are not constrained to working with bits (values that are either 0 or 1).

Local charity organisations use chatbots for social cause

Provost's Chair Professor Ng Hwee Tou explains how chatbots operate on finding fixed keywords from a user's sentences and sends out answers based on these keywords. This hinders communication between chatbots and their users due to the limitation of chatbots to detect the nuances in human languages, and may leave users feeling disappointed with the communication.
