NUS opens 140 modules to alumni for next 3 years

NUS is opening up 140 courses to its alumni over the next three years as part of its efforts to promote lifelong learning. In the first-year pilot of the initiative from August this year to July 2018, the modules will be available at no cost to the college's 278,000 alumni. In the subsequent two years, course fees - which range from about S$3,000 to S$3,500 per module - will continue to be waived, but a student services fee of S$261.85 will be charged for each semester, NUS said. The modules are offered by eight schools and faculties, including the School of Computing.

28 April 2017 – NUS Computing held the 10th iteration of its semestral student project showcase on the evening of 12 April 2017, at the school premises. Organised by Dr. Anand Bhojan, this SoC Term Project Showcase (STePS) involved some 360 students from eight modules showcasing their works as well as close to 30 students presenting their module independent projects (MIPs) and final year projects (FYPs).

Bidding goodbye to 2G phones (Part 1)

In an interview with Frontline, a Channel 8 current affairs programme, Associate Professor Chan Mun Choon said that the 3G network can support higher traffic than the 2G network. He added that in order to ensure faster Internet speeds, there is a need to phase out the 2G network in favour of the 3G and 4G network. Prof. Chan said that there are two main groups of people who are still using the 2G network - the elderly, who have little interest in using the Internet and primarily use their phones to make calls; and foreign workers, who may prefer to save money by using 2G phones instead of smartphones. He also added that some equipment may also still be using the 2G network, such as wireless cash register and monitoring equipment at construction sites.

Start-ups disrupt local forex scene

Dealing with foreign currencies and ever-fluid exchange rates can be frustrating for consumers. Local start-up RateX aims to "flatten" cross- border online shopping by offering real exchange rates without additional or hidden transaction fees. Designed by Computer Science students Lim Jing Rong and Davis Gay as well as Economics student Goh Jian Kai, the online payment tool matches the sum of an online overseas purchase with rates from currency exchange websites. This allows the user to pay for the purchase in his local currency.

NUS is restructuring its curriculum to allow some of its students to go on work attachments for as long as 18 months, starting from the new academic year in August. Anecdotally, many students do end up receiving offers at the end of their work stints. NUS computer science graduate Rey Neo Zhi Lei, 25, also landed his job as a software engineer at PayPal after interning there in his final year.

In AY2017/2018, NUS will offer about 30 new double major combinations and about 40 major-minor combinations. Students can choose from 16 subject areas, including Business Analytics, Computer Science and Information Security. NUS will also be introducing a revamped Bachelor of Computer in Information Systems (IS) degree programme. The programme offers new specialisations in the areas of financial technology, digital innovation and e-commerce.
