SoC Assistant Professor Wins Prestigious Research Award

SoC Assistant Professor Terence Sim is this year’s winner of the Temasek Young Investigator Award. 

Jointly presented by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA), the award is given to outstanding researchers working in areas of potential use in defence and national security.

Dr Sim, of the Department of Computer Science, was presented the award on 6 February 2006 for his work on face recognition.

His project, titled ‘Project Tallyface’, focuses on enhancing the capabilities of face recognition systems, in terms of speed and robustness.  

The award comes with a research grant of S$500,000 to the winner, and a further S$200,000 to the host faculty/school to reduce the winner's teaching load by half. Both amounts are disbursed over three years.
