Welcome
to the School of Computing (SoC) website.
We are glad to enter Academic Year 2007/8 with new vigour in
our teaching and research, and with plans for more
initiatives that harness the strength of the School in
service to both industry and the wider community. SoC was
established in 1998, but our history traces to years before
that, when we were the Department of Information Systems and
Computer Science (DISCS) in the Faculty of Science. As an
integral part of the National University of Singapore (NUS),
we are mindful of upholding the NUS tri-fold mission of
providing quality education, high impact research, and
service to country and society. |
In education, we are
working to enhance our curriculum even further. For students
seeking to graduate with more than a basic degree, we have
recently launched the Concurrent Degree Programme in
Interactive Digital Media with Carnegie Mellon University in
the US, and the Double Degree Programmes in Computer Science
and Mathematics/Applied Mathematics with NUS Faculty of
Science. We intend to build on this momentum, to seek out
new partners and develop additional double and concurrent
degree programmes.
Also building on the existing momentum, we will be seeking
certification for more of our programmes. As it is, we have
already gained recognition by ABET, the US-based
accreditation agency, for our bachelor degree programmes in
Computer Science and Information Systems. Looking beyond
curriculum, we are working to provide more opportunities for
students to learn outside the classroom with more varied
internship opportunities. By pursuing these myriad ways of
enriching the learning experience of our students, we hope
to be grooming future IT professionals who are not only able
to meet job market needs, but also able to serve as the
vanguard for new technological developments. Casting our
eyes to the more immediate needs of existing IT
professionals who wish to upgrade themselves, we are looking
into organising executive programmes.
In research, SoC endeavours to play an active role both
internationally and locally in a sustained manner. In our
established areas of strength, we seek to provide
leadership. In new and evolving areas, much could be
achieved through synergy among partners with complementary
strengths. To that end, we seek to forge closer
collaboration with various research institutes and industry.
We welcome discussions on new partnership or sponsorship
possibilities, and are ready to explore new avenues of
working with industry towards the next technological
breakthroughs for the benefit of both industry and the wider
community.
We wish you an enjoyable stay at our website, and welcome
your feedback and suggestions. Kindly send your queries to
corpcomm@comp.nus.edu.sg, and my staff will ensure that the
appropriate party attends to your needs.
To all alumni and cyber visitors who have also been to our
School in person, may we also invite you to visit us again
in the near future at our new School site at the Computing 1
(COM1) cluster. Following the recent completion of Phase 1
in our relocation plans, most of our research and teaching
facilities are now located at this new cluster. The
relocation plan is part of our effort towards providing a
more conducive learning environment for our students, and a
stronger identity within the SoC community. We hope to see
you soon.
