Dear Freshmen

On behalf of NUS School of Computing, welcome to the undergraduate studies in School of Computing!

Even though the first semester begins on 2 August, we have lined up a series of events for you as early as seven weeks before the semester begins. The calendar of events is attached in this letter.

It is important that you attend these activities to familiarise yourself with the course structure and degree requirements, and at the same time, be oriented on the use of computing facilities and academic culture in the School. In particular,

1. For students pursuing a Bachelor of Computing degree, you are required to attend a two-part session on "Introduction to your first programming module" on 23 July 2010 (10.00 am - 12.00 nn) at Lecture Theatre 17 (LT17). Through this session, you will be able to acquire a better appreciation of the first programming module offered by the School (be it Scheme (i.e. CS1101S) or C (i.e. CS1010)).

After the session, you should start to indicate whether you would like to register for CS1101S (Programming Methodology) module via a designated registration website. The deadline for registration is 26 July 2010 5.00 pm. In the case of overwhelming demand for this module, interviews may be required during that week.

2. In the afternoon of 23 July 2010, students pursuing a Bachelor of Computing programme are required to attend a course briefing. There, I will give you an update of the course structure and degree requirements. Please take note of the time and venue for this event:

Date: Friday, 23 July 2010
Time: 2.00 pm to 4.30 pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre 17 (LT17)

We will also introduce you to the use of Centralised Online Registration System (CORS)
for module bidding during this session.

3. All students are invited to the Dean's Welcome Tea specially prepared for you on 26 July 2010 at LT17 starting at 11.00 am. In this event, you will be able to mingle with faculty members and your peers so that you have a better understanding of the opportunities we provide at the School. If you have any academic queries, please email bcomp@comp.nus.edu.sg.

I look forward to meeting you soon.

Yours sincerely,
Khoo Siau Cheng (Dr)
Associate Professor and Vice-Dean (Undergraduate Studies)
