Danny POO Chiang Choon

Dr. Danny Poo graduated with a BSc (Honours), MSc and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom. He is currently a tenured Associate Professor and Assistant Dean at School of Computing, National University of Singapore (NUS), and is also a Director and Co-Founder of an NUS spin-off company, Cicada Cube Pte Ltd since 2000. Cicada Cube specializes in enterprise-level Information Search and Retrieval solutions.

Dr. Poo has extensive experience in Software Engineering, Information Management and Knowledge Management, both in the technical and managerial levels. He teaches Software Engineering at NUS and has carried out wide-ranging research and published extensively in the areas of Effective Search Strategies, Relevance Ranking and Feedbacks, Electronic Referencing, Meta-Data, Taxonomy Generation, Information Sharing, Knowledge Management Portals, Learning Algorithms, Object-Oriented Software Engineering, and Software Systems Maintenance. Over the years of research, Dr. Poo has acquired vast experience and knowledge in the area of search and retrieval solutions. He developed a technology that enhances the quality of searches. That technology is now commercialized by Cicada Cube Pte Ltd, a company he founded in 2000. In addition, he has a patent pending in the area of website filtering technique.

Dr. Poo has consulted for local and multi-national companies including: OCBC Bank, Rhodes-Schwarz, Gemplus, Tech Semiconductor, Micron Semiconductor, Monetary Authority of Singapore, Sema Group, Singapore Polytechnic, Ministry of Defence (Singapore), Port of Singapore Authority, and FTMS (Malaysia). Dr. Poo is a much sought-after reviewer for curriculum validation and review. He recently reviewed a diploma course in Info-Comm Technology for Singapore Polytechnic.

Dr. Poo serves in the Steering Committee of the Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC) since 1994 and recently he was appointed Vice-Chair of the same committee. He has been invited by the Japanese Government and Fukuoka City to participate in a forum on “USA, Kyushu and Asia International Exchange Project” in 1997 and 2002.

Dr. Poo has been invited to speak in the Taxonomies Conference Singapore 2004 on the topic of “Creating a Workable Knowledge Classification System”, organized by the Arkgroup Asia.

Dr. Poo is a co-author of a book on “Object-Oriented Programming and Java” published by Springer-Verlag in 1998. In 2004, he co-wrote another book on “Developing Systems Using J2EE” published by Pearson Prentice Hall.

Current Projects
Dr. Poo is currently involved in a large-scale project on Knowledge Management with funding being sourced from the Ministry of Education, Singapore.
