Document Analysis pertains to the processing and understanding of the contents in the documents, be they in the form of papers, microfilms, faxes, web pages, emails, etc. Image analysis is necessary in the case where the contents are yet not in electronic form. Text-based intelligence is then needed in information extraction, retrieval, clarification or summarization.
