14 October 2016 - First-year Computer Science student Quek Kai Yu was presented with the National Infocomm Scholarship at the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) Awards Ceremony held yesterday at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Guest-of-honour Minister for Communications and Information Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim said in his speech that there was a need for students to acquire the requisite skills and competencies as the infocomm sector would see 20% growth in the next five years. He added that the scholarships awarded would allow them to develop their potential in this field to the fullest.

Having always been keen on a career in the information technology (IT) industry, Kai Yu said that he was thankful for this opportunity as he moved one step closer to fulfilling his dream. However, this achievement did not come easy and the path he had taken was much longer than those of his counterparts. He began in the Normal Technical stream in secondary school before moving on to an Institute of Technical Education, a local polytechnic and then NUS. This award, Kai Yu added, was a culmination of his hard work and perseverance.

Wilson Ong Wei Sheng, a second year Master of Computing in Information Systems (Coursework) student, was also presented with the Skills Future Study Award at the ceremony. This award aims at encouraging recipients to develop specialist skills needed by future economic growth sectors or in areas of demand. Currently an IT project manager, Wilson has constantly sought to upgrade his skills through attending courses related to his job. He believes that the Master’s programme has allowed him to gain an overview of the IT field and industry, broadening his understanding beyond his experiences on the job.
