The inaugural Robots@NUS Competition 2017 saw 12 teams of NUS students developing innovative robotic aids for the elderly and the disabled, with the results announced on 8 January. An exhibition featuring the 12 projects was held at NUS University Town. Senior Lecturer from NUS Computer Science Dr Soo Yuen Jien chaired the event organising committee.

As an experiment, engineer and NUS School of Computing graduate Yeo Kheng Meng managed to get a modern Linux distribution running on a 25-year-old IBM PC from 1993 - an x86 machine that isn't vulnerable to Meltdown or Spectre CPU flaws, due to the fact that it doesn't support out-of-order processing.

SPH Magazines Pte Ltd announced the launch of Snappar, a mobile application for visual search and shopping powered by artificial intelligence (AI) company, ViSenze. With Snappar, users can find a product online by taking a picture of it with their mobile device or by uploading an existing image from social media. ViSenze is co-founded by Professor Chua Tat-Seng and NUS Computing alumnus Li Guang Da.
