Singapore has done well in some aspects when it comes to fostering entrepreneurship but has some way to go on to improve regulation and risk-taking, says the National University of Singapore School of Computing's Francis Yeoh.

15 cybersecurity projects, four of which involve NUS Computing researchers, were recently awarded more than $16 million in grants. These grants aim to spur research in cyber tools and technologies to strengthen Singapore's defence against rising global cyber threats. Associate Professor Liang Zhengkai and Professor Abhik Roychoudhury's work, as well as Professor Ooi Beng Chin and Assistant Professor Wang Wei's project, were awarded the National Cybersecurity R&D Programme grant. Associate Professor Chang Ee-Chien and Associate Professor Liang Zhengkai's research, together with Dr Ng See Kiong's project, were awarded the Singapore Cybersecurity Consortium grant.

A new scheme modeled after German and Swiss apprenticeship models has seen keen interest from university students. NUS is piloting the Cooperative Education Programme, which places students on 18 month internships. It will kick off with students in the business analytics and information security programmes, who start internships next May.
