19 October 2015 – Dr. Yin Kangkang and her collaborators won the Best Paper Award for their paper entitled ‘Learning Reduced-Order Feedback Policies for Motion Skills’, at the ACM SIGGRAPH/Eurographics Symposium on Computer Animation 2015 (SCA 2015) that was held in Los Angeles in early August.

Have sun will sail - NUS team develops solar-powered boat

A group of computer science and engineering students, led by Associate Professor Martin Henz from the Department of Computer Science and Dr Joerg Weigl, have converted a motorised sailing boat to one that uses only solar power and are exploring how to make it commercially viable.

Singapore students score big at international science and maths competitions

Singapore wins right to host IOI 2020, along with silver and bronze medals at IOI 2015

5 August 2015 – Team Singapore, coached by Dr. Steven Halim and Associate Professor Tan Sun Teck, won one silver medal and three bronze medals at the 27th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) that was held from 26 July to 2 August, in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Hackathon@SG produces innovative solutions to real-life challenges

More than 300 prototypes and applications to help solve Smart Nation challenges were developed during the Hackathon@SG and the co-located MIT Hacking Medicine@SG (HackMed) held at NUS Computing. Held in Singapore for the first time, the event saw a massive turnout of over 1,100 from all walks of life such as healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, programmers, designers, and students.

Reducing bias in eyewitness sketches

In a contribution to TODAY's Science section, Associate Professor Terence Sim from the Department of Computer Science writes about his project to combine psychological insights with image analysis algorithms to tackle the challenging problem of identifying suspects and criminals through face sketches. By studying how humans perceive and remember faces, he argues that he has devised a novel method to first elicit the face sketch from a witness’ memory, and then to match the sketch against a criminal database of photographs.

ShareInvestor, the financial internet media and technology company and subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), has acquired a 15 per cent stake in Investing Note Pte Ltd (InvestingNote) with an investment of S$150,000. Founded in 2014, InvestingNote is a social network site which incorporates innovative technologies to enable interaction amongst retail investors in Singapore and in the region. The project is currently incubated by Singapore Infocomm Technology (SiTF) and NUS’ Furnace.
