Hackathon@SG produces innovative solutions to real-life challenges

More than 300 prototypes and applications to help solve Smart Nation challenges were developed during the Hackathon@SG and the co-located MIT Hacking Medicine@SG (HackMed) held at NUS Computing. Held in Singapore for the first time, the event saw a massive turnout of over 1,100 from all walks of life such as healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, programmers, designers, and students.

Flipkart to use Singapore image search tech

Flipkart, India’s largest online marketplace, has started rolling out image searching on its mobile shopping app which it clams will revolutionise the shopping experience. It is using ViSenze (a spin-off company of NExT Search Centre) technology developed in Singapore for visual search and image recognition.

Reducing bias in eyewitness sketches

In a contribution to TODAY's Science section, Associate Professor Terence Sim from the Department of Computer Science writes about his project to combine psychological insights with image analysis algorithms to tackle the challenging problem of identifying suspects and criminals through face sketches. By studying how humans perceive and remember faces, he argues that he has devised a novel method to first elicit the face sketch from a witness’ memory, and then to match the sketch against a criminal database of photographs.

Solutions for the future

NUS and global industry leaders SAP and Swiss Re recently inked two three-year agreements. The MOU with enterprise application software provider SAP will give NUS students access to a cloud-based SAP HANA system, the in-memory computing platform for next-generation applications and analytics. The other MOU with reinsurance company Swiss Re is a collaboration with four NUS entities — the Business Analytics Centre, Business School, SoC and Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) — to incubate solutions that can overcome large and complex risks created by digitisation, societal and urban challenges.

ShareInvestor, the financial internet media and technology company and subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), has acquired a 15 per cent stake in Investing Note Pte Ltd (InvestingNote) with an investment of S$150,000. Founded in 2014, InvestingNote is a social network site which incorporates innovative technologies to enable interaction amongst retail investors in Singapore and in the region. The project is currently incubated by Singapore Infocomm Technology (SiTF) and NUS’ Furnace.

They invented an entirely new class of big-data techniques to measure app audiences. Meds monitoring app Jarvis wins Paypal-Braintree's Battlehack Singapore

Team Jarvis, comprising Information Systems alumnus Rajul Gupta, clinched the first prize at the second annual BattleHack Singapore 2015 organised by online payment providers PayPal and Braintree. The team came up with an app that monitors and allows the remote purchase of medication for the elderly.
