SoC Assistant Professor Ooi Wei Tsang Wins Best Paper Award in International Multimedia Conference

O n 27 to 31 October 2008, scholars and researchers in multimedia computing converged in Vancouver, Canada for the ACM Multimedia 2008 conference.

An annual multimedia research forum, ACM Multimedia covers various aspects of multimedia computing -- from underlying technologies to applications, theory to practice, and servers to networks to devices.

It was at this gathering of multimedia experts that Dr Ooi Wei Tsang, an Assistant Professor with NUS School of Computing, received the Best Paper Award for his work entitled “Streaming of Plants in Distributed Virtual Environments”.

The paper, which Dr Ooi co-authored in a team of five that spans France and Singapore, focuses on the realistic modelling of plants, which serves to enhance the three-dimensional experience that users of multimedia material may enjoy.

An NUS alumnus, Dr Ooi received his Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree from the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (now NUS School of Computing) in 1996, and his PhD from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 2001.

He spent a year as postdoctoral fellow at the Berkeley Multimedia Research Centre in UC Berkeley before joining the NUS faculty in 2002.
