Professor Ling Tok Wang (left in picture) has been presented the DASFAA Outstanding
Contributions Award for his work in database research. The award
presentation took place at DASFAA 2010, which was held in Tsukuba,
Japan from 1 to 4 April. He was one of two recipients chosen by an
international committee chaired by Professor Katsumi Tanaka (right
in picture) of Kyoto
University.
DASFAA, which stands for Database Systems for Advanced Applications,
is an annual international database conference in the Asia-Pacific
region. Besides showcasing state-of-the-art R & D activities in
database systems and their applications, the conference is a forum
for technical presentations and discussions among database
researchers, developers and users from academia, business and
industry.
The DASFAA award is the second award that Professor Ling has
received in recent months. He was named ACM Distinguished Scientist
for 2009. That award is conferred on ACM members with at least 15
years of professional experience and five years of continuous
Professional Membership, and who have achieved significant
accomplishments or have made a significant impact on the computing
field.
Prof Ling’s research interests include Data Modeling,
Entity-Relationship Approach, Object-Oriented Data Model,
Normalisation Theory, Logic and Database, Integrity Constraint
Checking, Semi-Structured Data Model, XML twig pattern query
processing, and XML keyword query processing.
He has been with NUS SoC since its days as a university department,
and has served in various leadership positions including vice dean
and department head.
