SoC Celebrates Commencement 2007 amid Bright Outlook for Infocomm Professionals

As Academic Year 2006/7 draws to a close, SoC is joining other faculties on campus in celebration at Commencement 2007, which marks the beginning of a new phase of life for the graduating cohort as they transit from students to alumni. For most in the Class of 2007 from SoC, the occasion is a double celebration as they are stepping into working life amid an infocomm boom.

A recent news article reported a record S$45 billion surge in Singapore’s infocomm sector while another article featured a local firm that has joined the big league in wireless technology. A third article indicated that Singapore is well placed to play a leading role in new media.

Indeed, anecdotal accounts of the graduating class bear out the upbeat news for infocomm professionals. Some landed jobs as early as the beginning of the year – way before the graduating students even took their final examinations. Their job offers have come from employers ranging from global financial services companies to internationally well-known technology firms such as Google. Some of these job placements are overseas, with job titles ranging from Analyst with the Equities division to Software Engineer.

In further validation of the individual accounts of the improving infocomm job market, the SoC job listing webpage, which is targeted at both recent graduates and existing students, has been receiving an influx of advertisements. They over both regular positions and vacation jobs, and are being offered by a gamut of companies, spanning local technology firms to government-linked companies and multinationals.

SoC is graduating a total of 595 students this year, with 459 of them getting their bachelor’s degree, and the rest doctorates and master’s degrees. Over a dozen of them will be receiving awards in recognition of excellence in academic achievements in two ceremonies held in the afternoon and evening of 6 July 2007.
