NUS SoC Professors Inducted as Fellows of Singapore Computer Society
P
rofessor Chua Tat Seng and Associate Professor Leong Hon Wai have been honoured for their contributions to the computing fraternity and industry in Singapore. They have been named Fellows of Singapore Computer Society, a distinction that is
reserved for senior members of the Society who have at least 20 years of professional experience, have made significant contributions to the Society and/or industry, and been accorded high honours by leading institutions and professional organisations.
Professor Chua Tat Seng
Prof Chua is a well-known figure in Singapore’s computing scene. He was the Founding Dean of NUS School of Computing, presiding over the School’s transition from a department within the Faculty of Science to a fully-fledged faculty. With his research interest in multimedia information processing, he has demonstrated his professional leadership by organising and serving as programme committee member of numerous international conferences in the areas of computer graphics, multimedia and text processing. Prof Chua is active in industry, having served as Chair of Board of Assessor of Certified IT Project Management (CITPM) and Certification in Outsourcing Management for IT (COMIT), and as Independent Director of several listed companies in Singapore. A mentor to current and burgeoning experts in Computing, his students, past and present, include chief executives of multinationals and international prize winners. Find out more about Prof Chua here
Prof Leong has his research interest in the design and analysis of efficent algorithms for optimisation problems from many application areas including VLSI CAD, transportation logistics and multimedia video processing. His research interest also extends into computational biology and transportation logistics. In the latter area, he has developed two software prototype systems: BAPS (Berth Allocation Planning System) for container trans-shipment ports; and RADS (Route ADvisory System) for land transportation, a fast intelligent bus/MRT search engine for commuters. Prof Leong enjoys teaching and working with students. His dedication in this aspect has earned him awards including the Inspiring Mentorship Award in 2009 and University Scholars Programme (USP) Award in 2008, both presented by the National University of Singapore. An enthusiast of programming competitions as a means of getting young people to be excited about Computing, he has frequented been associated with competitions such as National Olympiad in Informatics.
