Selected top performers in NOI will undergo further training
by NUS School of Computing to compete for four places to
represent Singapore at the prestigious International Olympiad in
Informatics (IOI), the ultimate international competition in
computing, to be held in Egypt.
This year, 106 students from 15 junior colleges and 11 secondary
schools participated in NOI. Each student was required to solve six
algorithmic tasks and to write a working computer program in Pascal,
C or C++ for each task.
The competition was held on 5 April 2008 while the results were
announced a week later, at the prize-giving ceremony. Ms Tham Ai
Chyn, Assistant Chief Executive (Industry & Cluster Development),
Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, was Guest-of-Honour at
the ceremony.
Awards were given to four overall winners, top two secondary
school contestants, top two junior colleges and top two secondary
schools. A special award was also presented to the youngest
medallist. The full winner list may be found
here.
Modelled after the IOI, NOI emphasises creativity in problem
solving on the one hand, and programming skill and expertise on the
other.
The competition also aims to spur interest within the school
community, and create more awareness among the students and teachers
on the finer points of programming, such as algorithmic techniques
and problem-solving skills.
NOI is part of the National Infocomm Competition (NIC) initiated by
the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA)
