NUS SoC Teams Chalk Up Top-10 Results in Latest Regional Round of ACM ICPC


 

 

ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM ICPC) is a prestigious annual multi-tiered programming competition targeted at university students worldwide.


Following gruelling training sessions led by Dr Tan Sun Teck and graduate students Steven Halim, Felix Halim, Su Zhan and Melvin Zhang Zhiyong, three teams each comprising three students took part in the competitions this year:

  1. NUSSoC1, comprising Victor Loh Bo Huai, Adhiraj Somani and Doan Manh Hung;

  2. NUSSoC2, comprising Ngo Minh Duc, Nguyen Hoanh Tien and Nguyen Duc Phong; and

  3. NUSSoC3, comprising Bi Ran, He Haocong and Daniel Aris Pandu Prasetia.

The three teams were sent to compete in different places under the regional tier of the contest, and all returned with results within the top 10:
 

NUSSoC2, 2nd place (from 60 teams) in Phuket, 3-4 November 2009;
NUSSoC1, 10th place in (from 60 teams) Phuket, 3-4 November 2009;
NUSSoC1, 3rd place (from 55 teams) in Manila, 22-23 October 2009;
NUSSoC2, 7th place (from 67 teams) in Jakarta, 20-21 October 2009; and
NUSS0C3, 10th place (from 67 teams) in Jakarta 20-21 October 2009.
 

By winning the second spot in the Phuket competitions, NUSSoC2 qualifies for the prestigious ACM ICPC World Finals in Harbin, China on 1-6 February 2010.

This is the second outing for the team at the ACM ICPC World Finals. They were at the 2009 finals held in March in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.
