isual characteristics of paintings such as colour, brushwork and composition constitute a large body of artistic concepts that facilitate expert analysis in the paintings domain. They closely relate to high-level semantic information of painting such as artist names, painting styles and art periods. Professor Chua Tat Seng and PhD student Yelizaveta Marchenko have created a technology that can make such expert analysis of paintings. Their creative research has earned the team best paper awards at the 2007 Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia and 2007 International Multimedia Modeling Conference.
