The National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI), organised by the
National University of Singapore (NUS) School of Computing,
presented a total of 12 prizes to deserving students and schools
who excel in creative problem solving and programming. This
year, 66 students from nine junior colleges and seven secondary
schools participated in the NOI. Each student was required to
solve six algorithmic tasks and to write a working computer
program in Pascal, C or C++ for each task.
Professor Lai Kim Fatt, Chief Knowledge Officer, National
Computer Systems Pte Ltd, was the Guest-of-Honour. Awards were
given to five overall winners, top two secondary school
contestants, top two junior colleges and top two secondary
schools. A special award was presented to the youngest medallist.
The top NOI winners will undergo further training by the NUS
School of Computing to compete for four places to represent
Singapore at the prestigious International Olympiad in
Informatics (IOI), the ultimate international competition in
computing, to be held in Croatia this year.Modelled after the
IOI, the NOI emphasises creativity in problem solving on the one
hand, and programming skill and expertise on the other. The
competition also aims to spur interest within the school
community, and create more awareness among the students and
teachers on the finer points of programming, such as algorithmic
techniques and problem-solving skills. The NOI is part of the
National Infocomm Competition (NIC) initiated by the Infocomm
Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). For more information,
