Economic Development Board Industrial Postgraduate Programme (EDB IPP)

The EDB IPP is an initiative by the Singapore Economic Development Board to establish a pool of PhD research manpower in Singapore with critical R&D skill sets for roles in industry through graduate training in a corporate R&D environment and local universities.

Candidates under IPP

bullet arrow Admitted IPP candidates must be full-time employees of the company while pursuing full-time PhD studies at NUS School of Computing.
bullet arrow The candidate is expected to spend at least 50% of the research project activity within the company's facility.
bullet arrow The candidate will undertake an approved jointly-identified research project, and be supervised by an NUS SoC full-time faculty member and a company staff with appropriate research qualifications at PhD level.
bullet arrow The award is governed by the following conditions:
 
  • The candidate must be a Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident.

  • The candidate must meet the prevailing admission criteria for PhD programme to SoC.

  • There is no bond requirement. Candidate should be either a new hire or existing employee of the company.

  • Sponsorship terms by EDB & company includes full tuition fees for PhD programme, monthly salary and employer’s CPF contribution (remuneration is determined by company; EDB provides support of up to S$3,300 monthly salary and corresponding CPF rates and full tuition fees, capped at 4 years).

 

Companies

Companies interested to participate in this programme will need to jointly scope research projects with an NUS SoC faculty member, and submit the research proposal to EDB for consideration.

The requirements of the company:

bullet arrow Local or multinational companies based in Singapore.
bullet arrow Established corporate R&D lab in Singapore with an identified team of researchers to be supervisors.
bullet arrow Good track record of research projects/activities suitable for PhD level.
bullet arrow Commitment to support candidate for 4 years towards attaining PhD.
bullet arrow Co-sharing (50%) of the company's research grant to NUS capped at S$12,500/student/year.


Company’s contributions:

bullet arrow Supervision and hosting of IPP candidates at research facility.
bullet arrow Research grant to academic faculties for cost incurred at faculties.
bullet arrow All other costs related to IPP Project and IPP trainee-incurred expenses (eg. insurance, equipment, travel, conferences, publications, etc).

 

Research Projects, Contractual Agreement & Intellectual Property Arrangements

NUS faculty members who wish to participate in EDB-IPP should, jointly with the collaborating company, contact EDB on sponsorship of the IPP/submission of project proposals. The project proposed for IPP should also be submitted to NUS SoC for approval.

Companies will then work with NUS Industrial Liaison Office (NUS ILO) and EDB to formulate contractual agreements for each project undertaken by the IPP candidate, company and NUS. Intellectual property arrangements arising from IPP projects undertaken by IPP candidates are to be agreed upon by both the company and NUS.
