SCIENCE CENTRE SINGAPORE
Internship - 7 Dec 09 to 9 Jan 10
Job Title: Constraint Programming Approach for
Science Education Programmes’ Timetabling Decision
Support and Scheduling System
Responsibilities
Job Scope :
A timetable solution must satisfy all hard
constraints, and may be only capable of partially
meeting soft constraints. We modeled the problem as
a Constraint Satisfactory Problem and adapted
lexicographic optimization approach to implement the
solution procedure; where each soft constraint is
treated as an objective with a priority.
The solution approach utilizes the solution space
reduction nature of constraint propagation to
optimize objectives sequentially. Different value
assignment strategies for constraint propagation are
investigated to explore their robustness and
effectiveness in performances.
The system allows department management to
indicate different combinations of preferences and
parameters, and view the resulting timetable and
related statistics in real time mode. The resulting
timetabling contributes to a better teaching
environment for both educators and students.

Introduction
The People At Work (TPAW) is a boutique executive
search firm. We specialize in recruiting senior
executives for positions throughout the
Asia-Pacific.
Our clientele consists of leading multinational
organizations in a wide range of industries,
including
financial services, environmental, technology,
manufacturing, automotive, consumer goods and real
estate and hospitality.
Background
Having been in business for almost 10 years now, we
have a rapidly growing database of individuals’
resumes from all around the world. This database is
an important tool of our business and the
information within needs be efficiently stored,
retrieved and updated regularly. Currently, TPAW has
an existing resume database, ranging from 15,000 to
20,000 records captured largely in MS Word or PDF
formats.
Recently TPAW identified a recruitment software
that allows for search and selection of
pre-specified candidates from this database.
Unfortunately a necessary prerequisite to use this
software requires the IMPORT of existing resumes
from our old database onto this new platform. Given
the current size of the database, manual entry and
transfer of data is not a viable approach.
The Challenge
We are now looking for a “bridging” program which
can help to accurately export these resumes. Each
candidate record will be identified by a total of
6-10 fields.
The final program must be able to read different
resume format (MS Word or PDF and recognize the
different data that will go into these fields.
Fields will include information such as:
-- name (first name, last name if possible)
-- email address
-- address/city/country of residence
-- phone number (home or mobile)
-- education qualifications (e.g. type of university
degree)
-- professional qualifications (e.g. CPA, ACCA, CFA,
etc)
-- current employer and current designation
-- etc
Complexity of this project arises from the
different data formats involved.
Performance Indicators
We would like a program which is:
-- able to deliver 90% accuracy in recognition of
data (that is, matching information to the right
field)
-- user-friendly
-- easy to install/run
-- able to process large amounts of data quickly
Position: Programmer (one time project)
Responsibility
This person will be responsible for the design,
development, implementation and follow up of the
program to meet the above objectives.
More detailed information will be provided to the
shortlisted programmers.
Other Information
- Proposals for this project may be from an
individual or a group
- Actual work can be developed from home with
regular consultations or updates at office
- Preferred completion within 4 weeks. Timing
to discuss further.
- Attractive Project fees
Interested candidates please send your resume

FIRST META PTE LTD
Web Developers @ high-growth start-up
Do you want to be part of a high-growth start-up?
First Meta is looking for developers. Exceptional
ones.
We are primarily using the LAMP stack (P being
PHP in this case) and Java for our systems.
However, you do NOT need to know these specific
technologies (technologies and market
requirements change!) We need "good coders" and
"great hackers" who can learn new technologies
fast. We want people who code as a hobby.
You will be working directly with our CTO. He
has been coding for 8 years and is as geeky as
you can get. You will participate in designing
and developing new products which will have
significant impact on the company.
This is a full-time position based in
Singapore but will consider other arrangements
(part-time/ project-based/ freelance etc.).
What are we looking for (or not)?
You do NOT need to have an ungodly number of
years of experience nor a degree or two, you
don’t have to be good). We need you to be:
- Amazing at at least one technology, any
one;
- Creative, flexible, good at
problem-solving and resourceful;
- Driven, highly motivated and hardworking
as hell - We don’t care what time you come
into work or what time you go off, as long
as the work gets done.
Please do not apply if you have not done any
coding outside of your school work!
So why join First Meta?
Because we rock. No, seriously. Since we
started in Feb 2007, we’ve hit every single
milestone that we set out to hit. First Meta is
the leading provider of financial services for
virtual worlds, and has been featured in the
likes of TechCrunch, WIRED, BBC, BusinessWeek,
CNet Asia etc. Oh yes, and Red Herring named us
one of the top 200 fastest-growing technology
companies in the world!
All that aside, you’ll be working with cool
people in a fun environment.
You’ll learn more here in a year that you
would 5 years at a corporate job.
You can (possibly) make more here in 5 years
than 10 years at a corporate job.
And you’ll be doing something that will
change the world. (I’ll explain why if you buy
me coffee.)
How to apply
If all these sound exciting to you, send your
resume to:
jointheteam@firstmeta.com
- Do this test and send your results
together with your resume:
http://www.firstmeta.com/public/fmtechinterview.txt
- Include the position you are applying for
in your subject line
- State your salary expectation. Don’t say
it’s flexible or negotiable (or anything
that is not made up of digits). We need to
make sure that our expectations are aligned.
We will try our best to respond to every
application.

SINGAPORE MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY
Postdoctoral and research engineer positions available
at the Singapore Management University
The School of Information Systems at the Singapore
Management University is seeking to fill a few
postdoctoral and research engineer positions for the
projects “Transfer Learning for Adaptive Relation
Extraction” and “Mining Interaction Behaviors from
Information Exchange Networks.” These are two-year
projects supported by the Singapore Defense Science
Organization, starting in April 2009.
The goal of the first project is to develop adaptive
learning algorithms for relation extraction from free
text. In real applications of relation extraction, there
is often insufficient training data available for the
target relations in the target domain, but labeled data
from related domains or for related relation types can
be borrowed. The research questions to be answered are
therefore (1) how existing transfer learning algorithms
can be applied in the particular context of relation
extraction, (2) how human knowledge can be incorporated,
and (2) what new transfer learning techniques are needed
for adaptive relation extraction.
The goal of the second project is to study
characterization and measurement of interaction
behaviors in information exchange networks based on
user-generated interaction data. We will focus on
information exchange networks which involve actors
sending information to one another. Examples of
such networks include email and blog networks. The
research will focus on interaction behaviors that
suggest actor roles in an information exchange network
and may infer relationships between actors in the
network.
The postdoctoral candidate must have completed all
requirements for his/her PhD degree by the time of
appointment. The research engineer candidate must have
completed a good undergraduate or master degree in
computer science or computer engineering. The
ideal candidates are expected to have the following
skills/qualifications:
-
Knowledge and experience in machine learning, data
mining and statistics/probabilities
-
Strong programming skills
-
Proficiency in English
For the first project, we also prefer candidates with
-
Knowledge and experience in natural language
processing
-
Experience with information extraction, transfer
learning and/or semi-supervised learning is a plus
For the second project, we also prefer candidates with
The salary for the postdoctoral position
will be around 5,000 SGD per month. The salary for
the research engineer position will be based on the
candidate’s working experience and academic degree.
To apply for the positions, send your full CV with list
of publications, names and contact information of two
referees, a statement of research qualifications and
interests, and two sample publications (if any) to the
following principle investigators:
-
Transfer Learning for Adaptive
Relation Extraction: Jing Jiang
(jingjiang@smu.edu.sg)
-
