Overview

The four-year IS programme will provide students with a deep appreciation of the organisational context of ICT; strong proficiency in the design and development of value-adding infocomm solutions; and strong proficiency in the cost-effective management of infocomm projects. This multidisciplinary education on information systems focuses on the application and management of information technology to enhance the effectiveness of organisations and businesses. It also analyses the impact and trends of technology and the relevant implications for the economy and the society.

The programme has gained recognition by ABET Inc., the world-respected US-based accreditation agency. The agency certified that the programmes are “substantially equivalent” to accredited programmes in the United States, which is the standard status that the agency offer to universities outside the United States.

IS graduates will be equipped with relevant knowledge to target for short to medium term positions as techno-strategist, ICT solutions architect, systems integrator, business process consultant/analyst, and infocomm project manager. Possible employers include end users of ICT, system integrators, consulting firms, market research firms, regulatory agencies and investment advisors.

Services Science, Management and Engineering Specialisation

To obtain a Specialisation in Services Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) , students are required to choose 24 MCs from the SSME specialisation list of modules. CS3361 and CS4361 are essential courses for the specialisation. This specialisation will enable students who want to pursue careers that have a service-orientation to develop an in-depth understanding in service innovations and service systems creation, operation and delivery.

University Scholars Programme (Information Systems)

Students in the University Scholars Programme who choose the Bachelor of Computing (Information Systems) major will take the Information Systems programme, but with the following variations:

1. They will not be required to read University Level Requirements (20 MCs).

(These are replaced by appropriate First-Tier Scholars Modules.)

2. They will be required to read two (instead of three) modules from the level-3000 module group (CS3250, CS3251, CS3254, CS3255, CS3260, CS3264, CS3361 ). Namely, 4 MCs fewer.

3. They will be required to read three (instead of four) modules from the level-4000 module group (CS4245, CS4250, CS4251, CS4252, CS4253, CS4254, CS4255, CS4265, CS4266, CS4267 , CS4361 ). Namely, 4 MCs fewer.

4. They will have 7 (instead of 27) MCs under Unrestricted Electives.
