Advanced Technology Attachment Programme

Information for Students

Introduction

The Advanced Technology Attachment Programme (ATAP) is offered twice a year, each time for a period of six months: January to June and May to November.

Students will be given 12 modular credits (MCs) upon completion of the six months’ attachment programme. Students who fail to complete the six months attachment programme will not be given the 12 MCs.  Students’ progress on projects will be monitored during attachment, and an assessment of their performance will be made (on Complete Satisfactory/Complete Unsatisfactory (CS/CU) basis) at the end of the attachment, based on the interim and final project reports.

As ATAP is a full-time attachment programme, students on attachment should, in principle, not take other modules offered by the University. Special consideration may be granted to students who wish to take one or two modules (night modules ONLY; no day modules allowed) on a part-time basis, if they have the approval of the host company and the respective module coordinator. Students must obtain formal approval from the host company and the respective module coordinator before they can proceed with module registration in CORS. They must also submit the written approvals to the School's Office of Undergraduate Studies by Monday, second week of each regular semester or the modules that they have selected will be deleted from the CORS records.

Students in their graduating semester are not allowed into ATAP.

Students taking modules in the special term are not allowed into ATAP.

Students who are doing UROP (CP3208 and CP3209) are also not eligible for ATAP.

Students cannot concurrently do CP4101 Final Year Project (FYP) or CS4349 Game Research Project (for CM students in the Concurrent Programme in Interactive Digital Media) with ATAP. Conversion of ATAP related work to FYP/CS4349 is not permitted, irrespective of how good the ATAP-work is.

Students cannot break up the period of their attachment. They must serve their internship for six months, from either January to June or May to November, depending on which period of deployment they have signed up for.

You are to note the following:

  1. You are allowed to apply for ATAP then SIP or vice versa. Only a maximum of 12 MCs of SoC internships (from ATAP/SIP) are taken into account for graduation requirements.
  2. Students who are already on ATAP are not allowed to reduce its duration to turn it into a SIP attachment.
  3. All internships will be recorded on the transcript except the following circumstance, if students request and register for another round of attachment (second SIP or second ATAP), students will not receive any MCs from their second attachment and these MCs will not be recorded on the transcript.
  4. If students request to go for second ATAP during regular term time, you are required to apply for Leave of Absence (LOA). Please refer to http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/adminpolicy/loa.html  for more information.
  5. Students are allowed to self-initiate attachment and convert them to ATAP. Please contact Ms Nur Arifah at: arifah@comp.nus.edu.sg  for the procedures. Kindly note there no retrospective approval will be given for self-initiated ATAP. All approvals must be sought for prior embarking on any self-initiated ATAP if you wish to earn credits.
  6. CEG students should follow the internship guidelines for CEG students. Please refer to http://www.ceg.nus.edu.sg/ia/

**For safety consideration while on internship, please see https://inetapps.nus.edu.sg/osh/portal/safety_guideline.html

Selection and Completion of Attachment

Students participating in the May to November 2012 rollout of ATAP may choose up to three projects at: https://mysoc.nus.edu.sg/~projadm/ from 27 February to 9 March 2012. Students should note that some companies may have restrictions for certain internship positions, including that the student must be a Singapore citizen. In such cases, only students who meet the special requirement will be able to view the project details.

After students have made their project selection, companies will review and shortlist the students who have chosen their projects. Students should have their undergraduate examinations results transcripts on standby so that the documents may be provided on demand to companies for review. Companies may interview the students at their own discretion. Students will be notified of the projects they have been allocated by 2 April 2012. They must confirm whether they accept the project allocated by 9 April 2012.

On acceptance of a project, no changes will be entertained. Students who have accepted a project and subsequently withdraw their acceptance, or fail to complete the attachment with their host organisation, will receive an "Unsatisfactory" grade for CP3880: Advanced Technology Attachment Programme (ATAP) on the transcript.

Some companies may vary the start and end dates of internships for internal reasons. In cases where an attachment begins and ends later than the dates given in the ATAP rollout timeline, the student will have his/her ATAP modular credits given in the next semester.

Full-Time Attachment

Students are expected to work with the host company full-time during their internship.

Supervisors

Each student project will be co-supervised by the organisation's supervisor and an academic supervisor  from the School.

Dress Code and Reporting Procedure on the First Day of Attachment

Students should dress appropriately in office attire and take with them their identification Card, Bank Account Number, Bank Name and Branch.

Leave

Students may be granted leave at the host organisation's discretion. For non-official matters that are beyond the scope of project work with the organisation, the organisation has the right to deduct their pay; however, this policy may vary from organisation to organisation. Students are advised to abide closely by the Human Resource practices of the organisation.

Medical Leave

Students are to inform their supervisor at the organisation if they are sick or need to consult a doctor. They are not to take leave of absence without their supervisor's prior knowledge. Students on medical leave will need to submit a medical certificate to their supervisor.

Vacation Leave

Paid vacation leave for students can only be granted at the discretion of the organisation.

Reservist (In-camp training)

Students who are required to go on reservist training need to inform the School (attn: Ms Quek Woon Woon, comqww@nus.edu.sg) and the host organisation upon receipt of their reservist training notification. Students who have received reservist training notification prior to accepting an internship offer must inform both ATAP Admin Office and the host organisation before accepting the internship offer. SoC will not request for reservist training deferment on behalf of students going on ATAP.

School Matters

Students should request permission from the host organisation to attend to school matters such as registration of modules, etc.

Project Presentation

The School does not require students to do a project presentation, but the company may do so at its discretion.

Project Reports

Students are to submit to their SoC project supervisor an interim report and company interim feedback 3 months after their attachment and a final report and company feedback form at the end of the attachment. The project report format may be found here. The company feedback form may be found here.

A soft copy of the final report should also be submitted online at:
https://dl.comp.nus.edu.sg

Instructions for the online submission may be found at:
https://mysoc.nus.edu.sg/~projadm/student/php/DLSubmission.php

Allowance

Students will be paid a minimum of S$1000/- per month. Organisations are exempted from making CPF contributions.

Insurance

Students are strongly encouraged to purchase their own insurance policy before going for their industrial attachment.  However, it is compulsory for students going for overseas ATAP to purchase additional insurance with a more comprehensive coverage.

Visa

Students on overseas attachment may need to apply for a visa from the host country. For that purpose, students should request an offer letter from the organisation, which should be submitted to the local embassy/high commission/consulate with the necessary application forms and other support documents.

Disclaimer of Liability

The School will not be held liable or responsible for any damage to properties and/or injuries suffered during attachment.

Tuition Fees

Although students will not attend lectures and tutorials on campus during the attachment period, they are given formal credits.  When students are claiming credits as part of the curriculum, they need to register with the university and pay the tuition fees for that credit to be formally recognised.

Tuition fees are not computed based on actual hours of services students received nor the facilities they actually use. It is based on the cost of providing students with the complete education needed to graduate, including both resource-intensive and not so resource-intensive components, divided among semesters. Besides, students on ATAP can continue to access facilities, e.g., medical services, the library, computer and sports facilities. In some instances, students need to make use of such facilities during their industrial attachment.
