School of Computing Exemption Scheme for Polytechnic Diploma Holders Admitted in AY2012-13

Decision made on the group of computing modules to be granted Advance Placement Credits (APCs) with regards to a diploma is the outcome of assessing relevant information from various sources, all provided by respective polytechnics and such decision is final.

Polytechnic graduates who are admitted to NUS Computing Courses may receive up to 40MCs of module exemptions from the following lists :

1. Up to 8 MCs from the University Level Requirements (ULR) (one Humanities and Social Science GEM module and one Breadth module).  The 8 MCs will be counted against the 60-MC limit that students are allowed to read in fulfilment of the 160 MCs required for graduation.*

2. Up to 12 MCs from Unrestricted Elective Modules (UEM). The 12 MCs from UEM will NOT be counted as part of the 60-MC limit that students are allowed to read.*

3. Specific exemptions of up to 20 MCs from programme requirements comprising of one or more modules as determined by the School on a case-by-case basis.  Details are indicated in the tables below :

*NOTE :

1. With effect from AY2011-12, for diploma holders to be granted the relevant APCs for Programme Requirements, the diploma must have been completed within the last 5 years prior to the year of admission to the University.
2. The APC of 20 MCs for ULR and UEM is equivalent to one semester of advance standing and will be awarded to all diploma holders of approved programmes from Polytechnics in Singapore, regardless of when the diploma was completed, in recognition of the overall knowledge gained from a Polytechnic education.
3. The exemption of 8 MCs from ULR and 12 MCs from UEM are tagged at Level-1000 modules.
4. APC will be updated into students' record by week 2 of semester 1.  Student will be able to verify the exemptions in student services centre in ISIS campus community under the 'transfer credit' tab.
5. Students receiving APC for a particular computing module may request to have the exemption for that module waived.  The request should be submitted to Mrs Kwek at the Office of Undergraduate Studies (COM1 #02-05) by Friday, week 3 of first semester of study.  Once the waiver is approved, it will be irrevocable.
6. Advance placement test will be phased-out in gradual process, thus it will only be applicable to limited diplomas till these diplomas are due for re-accreditation.  For information on diploma holders who are eligible to apply for placement test, please refer to the respective tables below.
