Contest Report

Report from the Contest Director

The first ever ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest [Asia Region Singapore Site] was conducted successfully at the School of Computing (SoC), National University of Singapore (NUS). I am happy and proud to report that the contest was a great success even though this is the first time that we are hosting it. This was largely due to the wonderful teamwork and some very committed individuals.

We had created a few records in Asia (not sure about other regions). We had 34 foreign teams from 9 foreign countries accepted by our site. All of them were present except the team from Jilin University, China because of VISA problem.
There were 15 local teams from 3 local universities.

Even though the official dates for the contest were 13th  and 14th December 2007, but teams started arriving on the NUS campus from 11th December. Most of the teams were housed in our student hostel (Prince George’s Park Residence).

On 13th December 2007, Prof. Mohan Kankanhalli, Acting Dean of the School of Computing, NUS officiated the opening ceremony. Prof. C.J. Hwang, the Asia Director of ACMICPC had kindly accepted our invitation to grace the occasion.
After the inauguration ceremony, there were two technical lectures given by our sponsors, IBM and Lenovo. The SoC graduate office also gave the contestants a brief introduction on graduate study in SoC and the scholarship on offer. The day ended with an one-hour practice session where contestants got themselves familiarized with the environment. The contest system endured the abuses by the contestants and passed with flying color.

On 14th December, the contest began as early as  8:30AM because there were some Muslim contestants who had to join their prayer session at 1.30pm. It was of 5 hours duration with 7 problems. At the end of the contest, the team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Prime, is the winner of the contest solving 6 out of the 7 problems. The results are available on our website http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~acmicpc/result.html

In summary, all problems of this site were solved by at least one team. The top four teams solved 6 problems and only 3 teams failed to solve any problem.

The contest provided a place for all the participants (contestants and coaches) to interact as the teams come from so many different countries. It also gave our team (committee members and student assistants) a good learning experience. I am sure we would be able to do even better four years later when we are scheduled to host the next regional in Singapore.

I would like to thank all the teams for participating in our contest; the coaches for providing me with all the information I need for preparing the contest; our main sponsors IBM and Lenovo for giving us the financial support and prizes; the committee members and students assistants for their hard work and dedication.
