B.Comp.(CM)

FAQ

Questions on the Programme:

1. Does this 4-year programme lead to an Honours degree?
    Yes.

2. Can a 3-year programme be made available?
At present, we have planned to offer only a 4-year programme. However,
   some CM
modules of interests to other SoC students will be opened to non-
   CM students. In
this way, 3-year IT students can also take some of these
   modules.

3. When do I enrol for the CM program?
Students who intend to enrol for the CM program will submit their application
     at the
end of Semester 2. Students applying for the CM program must meet
     the CAP requirement.
All applications will be subjected to approval by the
     school.

4.  Will the current ICM programme be replaced by the new CM programme?
The current ICM programme will be offered to the current batch of first year
     students
going on to their second year in July 2001, and the current ICM
     students. The new
CM programme will be offered only to the new students
     entering their first year in
July 2001.

5.  What are the requirements if University Scholars take this programme?
Students in the University Scholars Programme (USP) will adopt the
     following
variations of  the CM programme:
They will select the 8 First-Tier modules in place of University Level
     Requirements (28 MCs).
They will do the following 4 required modules
     at USP level:

     CS1102 Data Structures and Algorithms

     CS2103 Software Engineering

     CS3242 Hypermedia Technologies

     CS3248 Design of Interactive Media

The last two modules have strong project-emphasis.

6.  Can a series of talks be conducted on the various programmes?
Yes. In particular, a talk of the CM programme will be conducted for the newly

enrolling first year students once the programme is approved.

Industrty Concern:

7.   Will industry consider this a right bridge between computing and creativity?
What are the prospects of this course?

Industry has been consulted. Please refer to the programme web page for
      prospects
and career opportunity for this programme.

Questions on Modules:

8.   Many students are afraid of taking CS1231S. Can they take CS1231 instead?
Statistics and probability are needed for the CM programme. They are covered in

CS1231S and CS1232 but not CS1231. CM students matriculated in July 2001

(including the 2002 Poly batch) can choose to take either CS1231S or both

CS1231 and CS1232. However students matriculated in July 2002 can take either

      CS1231 or CS1231S.

9.   Can CM students take CS2102 instead of CS2102S?
Yes, CM students are only required to take CS2102.

10. Can CM students have more freedom in choosing the electives?
CM students can choose at least four free electives at the advance level without

      any restriction.

11. Can we have more IS/ICM modules in place of the technical modules?
The design of the CM programme already includes many non-technical or less

      technical modules.

12. Will Macromedia Flash, HTML, and other skills be taught in this programme?
These skills will be used in the project-based modules to design and develop

      interactive contents.

13. Will the CM programme focus only on Macromedia Flash, HTML, and other
    web-enabling applications?

No. The CM programme covers more than just Macromedia Flash, HTML, and
      other
web-enabling applications. It aims at providing students with a solid
      foundation that
includes both the technical and the artistic aspects.

14. Why is it that this B.Comp Communications and Media is not offered to the
current batch of  first year students? (Those matriculated in July 2000)

The decision to offer the new Media Programme only to the new batch of first
      year
students was made after much discussion and deliberation. It is not the
      best solution
but it is one that we can manage. There are many issues involved,
      particularly those
regarding timing and impact. For example, we need to consider
      what are the
modules that SoC and FASS can offer right now. Since we cannot
      produce teaching
materials for the new modules overnight, we need to give the
      teaching staff time to
adjust and to prepare for new course materials. In other
      words, at present, we can
only manage the first-year modules of the new
Media Programme. By the second year
of the programme, we would be
ready to offer second-year modules and so on. Hope
you can understand.

15.  I understand that in order to pass the 4-year degree, 135 MCs are required. After
my own computation, I realise that under your note on Bachelor of Computing
(Communication and Media), section 3.4.5(v), if I do  take up at least:
1 module from group A (media and internet technology)
1 module from group B (content creation and mass communication)
4 modules at level 4000 or above (excluding CS4101, CS4102)
4 free electives, I would end up with around 152 MCs which is grossly over and
above the  minimum requirement.  Thus I would like to reaffirm if I have interprete
      your instruction correctly.

There is a misinterpretation of the programme requirements. Item v in 3.4.5 Degree

Requirements  means: Choose CM and free electives to make up at least
      135 MCs
such that the  following conditions are satisfied:
      * at least 1 module is from Group A

      * at least 1 module is from Group B

      * at least 4 modules are at 4000 level or above

      * at least 4 modules are free electives

These clauses are not mutually exclusive. So, for instance, a student can choose
       two
4000 level free electives from Group A and  two 4000 level free electives from
      Group B
and satisfy the requirements, provided that all the modules chosen
      (including essentials
and electives) make up at least 135 MCs. Of course, the
free electives can be chosen from any faculty.

16. I am not sure whether I should take up IF1101E or CS1105, or both ?
With regards to IF1101E and CS1105, you need to take only one of them. We
     prefer that
you take IF1101E because it builds your foundation for other IF
     modules. It would be to
your advantage to take IF1101E instead of CS1105.
