STUDENTS' COMMENTS ON TEACHER

Faculty Member:  LEONG WING LUP, BEN

Faculty:  SCHOOL OF COMPUTING Semester:  1
Module:PROGRAMMING METHODOLOGY - CS1101S
Activity Type:LECTURE

Q9  What are the teacher's strengths?
1.Very passionate in what he teaches. Easily the best lecturer NUS have to offer.
2.he makes sure that students understand what he is lecturing before he moves on. interesting speaker and keeps the lecture lively
3.He is a very effective teacher who has a flair for teaching. The exam papers he set are always challenging and really tests us on our understanding, not on regurgitation (not many teachers can do that). He is also very concerned about his students beyond the classroom learning, always stopping to chat with students out of class, making them feel a sense of "belonging" and increases their willingness to put in effort for the module.
4.very warm
5.The teacher is able to teach topics in a systematic way, while at the same time keeping the lessons from getting too technical and mundane. Lectures have always been interactive and proper attention is always given to students who need additional aid, but not to the point of spoonfeeding. The first thing that the professor teaches the students is to do the right thing and to assume responsibility in our own learning (and life). This is perhaps what every lecturer expects the students to do, but he certainly is the one that makes it clear to the students of his expectations.
6.Very enthusiastic about teaching and he tries to engage every students during lectures.
7.Interesting, responsible, showing concerns etc. But MOST IMPORTANTLY: Instant replies to ANY queries or email ! =)
8.He is very friendly and approachable. He really takes an effort to reach out and help out students who are having difficulties or are stuck during this module. Overall, a great teacher.
9.Able to teach well.
10.The way he sets problem sets and exams makes us think much more. He makes exams much more than just to score and get grades. Rather, he makes exam become a learning process where new ideas surface in the questions and we have apply whatever we learnt to try grasp the new idea.
11.Concerned about the individual students.
12.He is very approachable. Although everything in the module is done in a very fast phase, There is also enough practise to it. And I think he did a great job in organising the time for consultation.
13.intelligence and helpfulness are his strength.
14.Very dynamic and interesting.
15.nil
16.encourage student to think
17.He has his own teaching style meanwhile keep approachable from all of students. Dr Ben is cool, anyway. I really appreciate the efforts made by him to make every students comfortable in this killing module and many thanks to him for showing the beauty of programming through this whole semester. In one word, Dr Ben is the most impressive lecturer I have ever seen and he always show his passion on computing instead of only being capable of teaching cool stuff in class.
18.Very clear teaching strategy, cannot be better~!
19.He always encourage us to deal with comlexity. He gives us a lot of confidence. for the lectures, though the pace is quite fast! but the idea is clearly explained. we can learn a lot from every lecture.
20.He's super smart. He thinks super fast, though sometimes i cannot follow. He gives us enough assignment to help us understanding the topic, though a bit too much.
21.don't konw all is good
22.Can make complex things to be simple.
23.Can always state abstract concepts in clear and interesting way to make students understand.
24.teach with emotion
25.Hard-working and prepared a lot for his students
26.- Take care of students. - Occasionally tells jokes during class. - Creates a lot of support helplines for weaker students. (Consultation, forum, chatroom) - Pay attention to every student and knows all our names. - Creates exams that are stunning and very creative.

Q10  What improvements would you suggest to the teacher?

5.He needs to slow down sometimes..
6.No need to improve.
7.Perhaps, teaching the basic concepts and theories more slowly.
8.His teaching pace can be quite fast for us to catch up and the workload is quite heavy.
9.None.
10.N.A. (He did well for many things, so notting to coment)
11.nothing
12.Move slightly slower
13.speak slowly...
14.nil, perfect
15.Keep your teaching style and better slow your speech in lecture.
16.Slow down speaking speed.
17.Speak too fast. Spend less time on useless things and spend the time on the topic
18.speake slower
19.Give us more time to digest the concept and find what is going on.

STUDENTS' NOMINATIONS FOR BEST TEACHING

Faculty Member:  LEONG WING LUP, BEN
Department:  COMPUTER SCIENCE Academic Year:  2008/2009
Faculty:  SCHOOL OF COMPUTING Semester:  1

Module Code:CS1101SNo of Nominations:14

1.He has a very unique style of lecturing that is both effective and captures the attention of students. Moreover, he is concerned about his students not just in terms of academic excellence, but also their lives beyond the classroom learning. He is always available for consultation, and will stop and chat with students when he sees them along the corridors. His exams are challenging and stimulate the minds of students. It really makes students work hard to get the mark, instead of relying purely on regurgitation. He is the best teacher I've had since I started my learning in the education system, and I find that he truly deserves this award.
2.Professor Ben really cares about the students who are taking his CS1101S module. Not only he prepared the teaching material well, but he also perpetually urge the class to go beyond classroom learning. He is one lecturer that really walks the talk, shown in how he passionately facilitates the groups of students in the Computing for Voluntary Welfare Organizations. Students in his class are always reminded that it is not talent that is important to succeed, but the will to assume responsibility for our own life, be it learning, interacting or giving back to the society. He is also one of the rare adults who emphasizes the virtue of distinguishing and doing what is right, instead of succumbing to pragmatism or power chase. He also carefully sieves and monitors the teaching assistants such that they are not only getting their teaching job done, but to actually put genuine interest in the progress of the students in their custody. This further contributes to the strong support system in the albeit stressful module. One of his distinctive edge is his congeniality and his ability to systematize difficult concepts to bite-size, digestible bits, while at the same time prompting students to do more independent exploration. Not to say the least, he is never complacent, and this can be shown by the improvements of problem sets, exercises and exams over the years, and the fact that he monitors the teaching assistants closely. In all, CS1101S is not a module that can be taught easily and Professor Ben has proven himself the rightful lecturer for the module. Given all his efforts to perpetually refine the teaching material and style, and to ensure no students left behind in his module, it would only be right that we give him due respect and recognition.
3.Dr Ben not only teaches us the usual programming stuff, but he actually show concerns to each individual student. He personally email each student on their progress. Most importantly i was inspired by him to have a different look on life and education on the whole [mainly due to his philosophical last lecture on how to be optimistic in life and finding what you are really good at doing and pursue it to the fullest.]
4.He is the most helpful lecture that i had seen. In addition, he also do care about our wellfare other than our studies. He also teaches us some useful knowledge.
5.being very devoted , understanding students and giving golden advices in the last lectures.
6.His last lecture is very inspiring.
7.It is him who pushes me hard throughout this semester and teach a lot more than any other teachers. CS1101S is fabulous because Dr Ben is the lecturer. All I learn in this module is worth my efforts and I will strongly recommend juniors to take this module next year.
8.1 perfect time handling 2 perfect concept teaching 3 perfect friendly temper 4 cannot be better in soc :) ps. I also want to vote for the great teacher NG KAH LOON - MA1101R Linear Algebra I, but he is that good and i believe many of us will vote for him, in contrast, CS1101S has fewer people in class.
9.He is the best lecture I have ever seen. I think he is the best lecture in NUS!!!
10.good job
