A. GUIDELINES FOR INTERPRETING THE REPORT

The teacher evaluation report is for developmental purposes and is meant to help identify strengths and areas for improvement. Please consider the following recommendations that will aid in interpreting the results:
  1. Examine the report by taking note of patterns in order to consider how best to act on the feedback your students have taken the time to provide. Use the reflection section at the end to reflect upon how you might act on the feedback.

  2. These evaluations stem from student perception and thus constitute one source of evidence among others as to the quality of your teaching. Any response to the feedback should be based on the most representative results rather than on outlying responses.

  3. Upon getting a general sense as to what has gone well, and which areas may require attention and improvement, it is important to drill down to the related questions. These questions can help guide future action if feedback from students suggest areas for improvement.

  4. Keep both the likert scale and written comments in mind while reading through the report. High scores (4+) suggest student consensus indicating a strength. On the other hand, low scores (2-) should be considered as an area that requires immediate developmental focus based on student feedback.

D. STRENGTHS

What are Leong Wing Lup, Ben's strengths?

Comments
Approachable professor, easy to communicate with, gives good advice.
His lessons are interesting
Excellent at challenging students to think analytically. Also has a great sense of humour.
Ability to effective codes to show how to shorten answers effectively
Prof Ben honestly and sincerely cares about teaching and whether we understand the subject matter. I think that is very commendable. Furthermore, his style of teaching (integrating RPG-like mechanics) really helps to inspire me to go the extra mile and do that extra side quest for that sweet sweet exp.
– Designing the coursework in a way that encourages independent learning and self-exploration
Consistent and caring for students
helping us focus on concepts
building up the chain of thought
Prof Ben's strengths are that his questions for tests and exams are interesting, difficult and are able to make us smarter after doing the questions.
He encourages students to develop themselves, and at the same time does his best for his students.
Prof Ben's teachings are straightforward and clear. I was able to catch on his explanations and ideas as he was clear in his presentations and sharings. He also engages the class actively which makes learning fun and enjoyable.
Ability to interact with students on a personal level.
One of his other strong points is the ability to incite a strong passion for the subject.
His speech is encouraging.
Exciting classes, fast, effective, basically any good adjective
As per Recitation comments.
– online lectures are structured in small 10 min + sections that helps us to learn section by section and makes it easy for us to review parts that we are weaker in
The examples provided showcase various nuances in the material that would otherwise be unappreciated
Attentive to each students' needs
Good teacher
I think the whole course is the best course that I have taken in my life. My professor is able to simplify lecture concepts very well during recitation. Best example would be on memoization.
Lectures always provide good examples of the topic that are complex enough to challenge us to understand it, yet not too challenging so that we can understand it after some work on the topic.
Engaging and interesting. He also explains concepts clearly and comprehensively.
Prof Ben is extremely dedicated. He helps students who are in need and he is very prompt to give us feedback.
He is a very experienced teacher and conveys the subject material of the course to his students very effectively. At the same time, he also addresses his students' concerns promptly and ensures a smooth learning process.
Explaining and teaching ideas clearly
Interesting, Class in Relaxing Atmosphere,
Engaging and motivates you to think and work our brains
He's able to see things from various perspectives including ours and nobody is left out in his class. He tries to make the class engaging and I appreciate that. He provides wisdom from outside of the class too.
Very sharp, knowledgable and really cares for his student's interests
He is very familiar with the subject.
His teaching of the subject is good.
Entertaining
Prof Ben is very encouraging. His passion in programming inspires students like me to enjoy and appreciate coding. It has truly been an honor to be Prof Ben's student
Very creative questions asked
Understands lecture material well enough to ensure that all questions from any angle could be answered.
The questions stretches the mind :/
Prof Ben is very good at setting exam questions.
Straight to the point, understandable, highly effective
Prof Ben is caring, charismatic, and introduces new perspective in ways of thinking when solving questions, and his lessons are always intense and forces us to think out of the box. Can't imagine any teacher that can be better than him.
–Living up to the name of being Prof Ben :)
able to explain complex concepts with clairty
cares for his students alot

E. AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

What improvements would you suggest to Leong Wing Lup, Ben?

Comments
Devote more time to the weaker students.
Perhaps the online lectures could use a little more explanations and go through new concepts at a slower pace.
Perhaps be less cryptic when giving advice when students pose questions. I know you're not supposed to just give answers because that defeats the purpose of learning something on your own. But sometimes his advice are seemed as unhelpful and would cause some students to give up. It's a balance.
– Questions posed during the lectures could be revisited at some point later on.
slow down just a bit once in awhile
nil
He can give students more detailed notes especially on certain difficult concepts.
Some of the subject material could be simplified a little bit for greater understanding.
Nil
Nothing really. How cool is that.
Sometimes he should not assume students will understand the content easily. he should explain more clearly when going through questions.
Lol none
As per Recitation comments.
Lectures were great, but the final few for C felt rushed
Speaks very fast, tend to not really focus as much on weaker students
I would prefer exam practice to be more similar to the actual exams.
I really think C could have had more in depth coverage, as the lectures left a lot of us confused and we had to rely heavily on online materials, more so than in python.
My only suggestion would be that he should be more patient with the students who are not able to keep up with the pace of the class.
Sometimes explanations are a little unclear.
Could spend less time on admin and other matters before commencing lessons proper
NIL
Can try to speak a bit slower. Just returning from NS and not used to the environment yet
Making the bar to succeed or score even higher.
Prof Ben tends to ramble/sidetrack sometimes
Set easier questions for exams
Just stay this way
NIL
Some of the lectures were either too fast or too slow; Pacing feels inconsistent at times, but the reasons for the inconsistent pacing were covered in the Recitations and Tutorials.
The section on C programming is unclear to me, had to trial and error a lot, and rely on online tutorial sites (but I still can't get it :( )
NIL.
NIL
Nah he is perfect just the way he is -Bruno Mars

D. STRENGTHS

What are Leong Wing Lup, Ben's strengths?

Comments
Dedicated teacher, who amazingly shows concern for student development. The lessons that he teaches on personal development are also likely to stay with students throughout the rest of university. And the questions he set are really fun.
Great
– conducts lessons in a way that allows students to better appreciate and develop the thought process rather than just focusing on the solutions
- conducts recitation in a way that is easy to follow and understand
Foster interest in the subject and also learning to manage complexity of code
Able to explain things clearly.
He engages well with the students
Simplifies complex concepts very well.
He's too well versed in the subject material, and really crazy smart but that means he also sets really hard but interesting questions for examinations......
He encourages students to think creatively and critically, and conducts the course in an extremely engaging and fun manner that makes it easy to follow.
Explaining and teaching ideas clearly
Good explanations and examples of difficult concepts
Interesting
Engaging
He made us hungry for knowledge by leaving us with a obnoxiously hard question at the end of the lesson.
Very creative questions asked
He is very good at setting exam questions.
The questions are difficult.
Effective, focused teaching
Able to explain his thinking processes clearly.
His lessons are interesting
Excellent at challenging students to think analytically. Also has a great sense of humour.
He encourages students to develop themselves, and at the same time does his best for his students.
engaging
Enouraging independent learning, provoking deeper thought about subject material, and challenging students sufficiently to stimulate growth.
bringing up concepts well
He recitations are clear and interesting.
In recitation, he would pose questions that are difficult enough to make you have to think. But yet easy enough for you to understand it in a short amount of time. This is very encouraging as you feel like you're learning. (in fact, you are!)
Any questions fielded to him are immediately answered, with little to no waiting.

E. AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

What improvements would you suggest to Leong Wing Lup, Ben?

Comments
It is difficult to manage a public image from the position of a professional academic without racking in controversy and people fussing over your each and every word. While people in Singapore are entitled to express their opinions to a certain legislative extent, it would certainly be beneficial to your public standing if your opinions do not take an extreme stance, such that the public would react less sensitively to your down to earth remarks.

Teach additional tricks to students.
Perhaps the online lectures could use a little more explanations and go through new concepts at a slower pace.
Some of the subject material could be simplified a little bit for greater understanding.
Nothing. How cool si that.
Perhaps more guidance could be provided at the start of the module so as to help students who have had no prior exposure to programming. Some face to face sessions to guide such students and suggest how they should approach the homework and assignments would have been helpful too.

have a better system of asking students to answer questions as some students get to answer really easy questions and others are stuck with the impossible ones.
