Introduction to UROP (Computing)

UROP provides a unique opportunity for bright undergraduates to undertake research work (and earn 8 MCs) under the supervision of experienced researchers. Many UROP students continue on to work with their UROP supervisors for their Honours and MSc/PhD research work.

On the other hand, a UROP project provides the faculty members a chance to work with some of our best undergraduates and to develop a longer-term research relationship with them.

A UROP project is a single research-oriented project to be done over the course of one year by one student. A student working on the UROP project takes a two-module (8 MCs) sequence spread over two semesters:

CS3208: Undergraduate Research in Computing I
CS3209: Undergraduate Research in Computing II
UROP students are expected to do full-time research work during the vacation preceding each of the two semesters.

It is expected that the student will complete an initial research study on the project by the end of the vacation-plus-first-semester and will submit an interim progress report for CS3208.

The student will continue with the (same) project and complete it by the end of the following vacation-plus-second-semester. They will then submit a final project report for CS3209 similar in format to the one for CS4101. The UROP project presentation will also be conducted in the same period as CS4101.
