Some Rules for Project Grouping

  1) 5 persons from the same tutorial group form a group . No spanning of tutorial groups is allowed.

  2) After tutorial registration, please sign up for project groups at your 1st tutorial or come to Ms Yang Hui's Office (S16  07-02) to sign up. You need to clarify your group member's matric number, name in the matric card, group leader's email address and the public attraction your group chosen

  3) The deadline for project grouping is 1200 Sat 26 Jan.

PROGRAMMING ASSIGNMENT 1 - Program for Speech and Audio Processing

Due date: 8th Feb (Fri) by 1700 Hrs

Descriptions: To implement filters for audio and speech processing. download the problems.

Report: To submit: (a) not more than 6-page report covering the design, program structure and testing the system; (b) source and executable codes (in your own ¡°open¡± directory) for presentation to the Instructor during grading.

Remarks: (a) Flexibility and effectiveness of system is most important. (b) This is an individual assignment, you are required to present some aspects of system when asked during project demo.

**Late Submissions: We impose the following penalties for late submissions. (a) Late but within 24 hours: 25% reduction in grades. (b) Later but within 3 days: 60% reduction in grades. (c) After 3 days: zero marks.¡¡


PROGRAMMING ASSIGNMENT 2 - Implementation of a Web-based Tourist Information System

Due date:  Part A: 18th March (Mon) by 1700 Hrs,  Part B: 28th March (Thu) by 1200 Hrs

Descriptions: To select a public attraction in Singapore, and design a multimedia presentation to provide interesting information about the attraction. The information provided should cover history, features, transport and other useful tourist information. The team should gather sufficient multimedia data to provide most effective presentation. Because of copyright problem, most data, including audio, image and video should be shot by the team. 

       The system should permit users to locate information via the usual browsing (or link navigation) and querying. The queries could be posed in the form of free-text and voice input. If possible, a Q&A conversation mode of information retrieval should be supported. In response to user queries, the system should return a multimedia presentation as results. Extra grades will be given to polish multimedia presentations involving video.

Data: You are expected to collect sufficient MM data to answer all common queries by tourists and general public. The information organization can be oriented towards tourists or to students for education purpose. You are expected to shot/provide at least 10 minutes of video, and the desired audio commentaries to text, image and video.

Deliverables: The deliverable is divided into 2 parts.

¡¤   Part A concerns with information gathering and organization. The deliverable is the set of MM data organized on the web to permit users to browse and obtain information on all aspects of the chosen attraction.

¡¤   Part B adds in retrieval functions to permit users to look for information by issuing free-text or speech queries in a conversational manner.

Given: You will demonstrate your system on the multimedia machines setup in the MM Lab. The MM system supports input devices for: text, speech, video camera, and digitizer tablet. The output includes: usual MM displays, and voice synthesizer output. For software support: you will be given tools to perform free-text information retrieval, libraries to manipulate digital images and videos.

Report: To submit: (a) not more than 4-page report describing the design and organization of information/knowledge (Part A); (b) not more than 4-page report describing the design of implementation of system, including program structure and testing of the system (Part B); (c) make your systems from parts A & B accessible from the web; and (d) submit in a zipped disk the electronic executable version of your overall data and system (both parts A&B).

Marking Criteria:

a)   Information contents and the design of audio-visual presentation to queries.

b)   Extra grades will be given to polish and flexible video presentation based on queries.

c)   All members are required to present some aspects of system during project demo.

CS3242S Students: Must implement and demonstrate conversational Q&A features.
