CS5233 Modelling and Simulation Techniques
Assignment 3: A Literature Survey on Selected Topics
Each group will work on one of the following :
1. Crisis Management Simulation
2. Symbiotic Simulation/Direct Data-Driven Application Systems
3. Grand Challenges in Modelling and Simulation
You should stick to the same grouping as the previous assignments, unless
you have strong reasons for changing. As usual, you have to email me your
group number, and 1st and 2nd choices of topic, and you are not allowed
to start until you have been given permission to do so. There is a quota
for each topic and will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
Each group needs to find 4-5 articles on its own topic using WWW or
library facilities. Finding appropriate articles is important and may contribute
to a higher mark.
Each group delivers a written survey report containing the following:
-
problem formulation: describe the main concepts in your topic
-
techniques and methods: describe the main methods being used within
your topic, providing your own critique and opinions.
-
Summary: summarise your report
-
List of articles that you have used in preparing your report. (give title
of the article, authors and place of publication. If it has been published
on WWW, then add the web-address to it).
The deadline for submitting your report is: midnight
15th April 2009. You also have to email me the softcopy of your
report by the said deadline.
Structure and content of the survey report
-
Your report must be tutorial and self-contained
-
It should not exceed 5 pages of 12-point typefont and double spacing (you
will be penalised if you do not conform to the guidelines)
-
It should show your understanding of the most important concepts
and methods within your topic
-
You may structure your report as you wish, but you must obey the following
rules (to make your report easily verifiable).
-
you are expected to use your own wording and formulation, except when you
quote from other publications and put it in quotes, as explained below.
-
All quotations should be put in quotation-marks and should refer to the
source article and page number, e.g., lookahead was defined as "
the ability to ..." (see Fujimoto et al., page 695).
-
If you say something that is not a direct quote, but is stated in some
other form in one of the articles, you must refer to that article, e.g.,
performance of the conservative PDES schemes depends on lookahead as discussed
in [give reference to the source].
-
You may say something that is not mentioned in the articles, but according
to your understanding should be correct. You are strongly encouraged to
practise such initiatives and signs of creativity. However, it should be
clear what your idea is and what is told by other researchers.
