These exercises help to sharpen your eyes by doing critique of existing special effects.
These are individual exercises.
You will be given video clips of special effects to analyze and critique. You will present your analysis and critique in a 20-min private session, with 15 min for presentation and 5 min for question & answer.

Critique 1
In this assignment, you will be given a video clip of a special effect in a commercial production. Your tasks are as follows:
>> Analyze how the special effect can be produced.
>> Analyze what kind of vision and/or graphics techniques are involved in producing the special effects.
>> Work out simple examples using existing software to demonstrate and support your analysis.

Notes:
>> You don't need to describe the exact method that was used to produce the effect.
Instead, you should present your ideas about how the effect can be produced.

Grading Criteria:
>> How well you explain how the special effect can be produced.
>> How well you explain what vision and/or graphics techniques are involved, and how are they used.
>> How well you use simple examples to demonstrate or support your analysis.
>> How convincing are your explanations.

Comments:
>> Some students were unclear about the requirements of the critique and the evaluation criteria.
As a result, their critique presentations don't meet the evaluation criteria well.
>> Some students had problems explaining the details of their proposed methods clearly.
Just saying "use CG animation" or "use miniatures" is not enough. You need to explain how the methods work.
>> Some students did not present examples to demonstrate or support their ideas.
In fact, if the students had tried their hands at the examples, they would understand the details of how their proposed
methods may or may not work.

Sample Good Examples:
>> static camera view
>> moving camera view
>> cockpit view
>> use of miniature

Critique 2

>> Analyze and explain the weaknesses of the special effect in terms of
     - Visual realism: Which part of the effect is not realistic? Why?

>> Propose improvements of the special effect in terms of
     - Vvisual realism: How can you improve it?
Work out simple examples using existing software to demonstrate and support your ideas.

Grading Criteria:
>> How well you analyze and explain the weaknesses of the special effect.
>> How well you explained the proposed methods of improving the special effect.
>> How well you use simple examples to demonstrate or support your analysis.
>> How convincing are your explanations.
