My Industrial Experience

Career Highlights

Demonstrated Skills

Software Engineering Skills. Back in 2000, I co-designed a service oriented payroll application (ePayroll2000) using technologies very new at the time. This was the first such application in Sri Lanka, and was instrumental in securing critical outsourcing contracts for hSenid. The software went on to win a British Computer Society award, and resulted in invited talks and a publication.

Training Skills.  At my former workplace (hSenid Software Intl.) I was in charge of training the first few batches of new recruits. I also held regular workshops for training developers in new technologies such as OOP, UML and Java.

Project Management Skills. I was the project leader for a number of strategic, and successful, projects at hSenid.

Process Management Skills. I was a part of the Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG) of hSenid. I was involved in hSenid's adoption of the agile software process of XP (when XP was still in its infancy).

Recruitment Skills. I was part of hSenid’s recruitment team that went for on-campus recruitment talks/interviews, and was involved in setting exam papers for selection exams. I have interviewed candidates on technical aspects.

Knowledge on Corporate Growth. I was one of the initial five member team of hSenid’s international division, which grew rapidly, and today a separate company having operations in 10+ countries. This gave me first-hand experience within a very short time the various phases a software house goes through.

Industry Certifications. As proof of my expertise, I have earned a number of industry recognized certifications.

Industry-Related Research/Teaching at National Uni. of Singapore

Software Engineering Project Course. I was involved in CS3215 (Software Engineering Project) for six semesters. Following are my other contributions to the course.

Supervising Student Projects. I co-supervised number software-intensive research projects done by honors year students and exchange students (both at undergraduate and masters level).

Industry Collaborations. In my research I collaborated with Microsoft(US), STE pte ltd (Singapore), SriLogic pvt ltd (Sri Lanka), and ex-members of our research group who are now in the software industry.

Studying Industry Best Practices. As a part of my research, I have studied industry best practices (such as design patterns), and analyzed an array of software systems built by industry leading software vendors such as Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics and Apache Software Foundation, resulting in several publications [1][3][5][6][7].

Keeping Abreast with Industry Trends. An important part of my research is to constantly scan the technology landscape and analyze how emerging technologies affect our research directions (e.g., [2]).
