Dr. Danny Chiang Choon POO

Dr. Danny Poo graduated with a BSc (Honours), MSc and PhD in Computation from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom. He is currently a tenured Associate Professor at School of Computing, National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also a Director and Co-Founder of an NUS spin-off company, Cicada Cube Pte Ltd since 2000. Cicada Cube specializes in enterprise-level Information Search and Retrieval solutions. The latter's solutions have been deployed at organizations like the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), National Library Board (NLB), Ministry of Manpower (MOM), National University of Sing apore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), to name a few.

Dr. Poo has extensive experience in Software Engineering, Information Management and Knowledge Management, both in the technical and managerial levels. He teaches Software Engineering and Enterprise Systems Development at the NUS and has carr ied out wide-ranging research in the areas of Effective Search Strategies, Relevance Ranking and Feedbacks, Electronic Referencing, Meta-Data, Taxonomy Generation, Information Sharing, Knowledge Management Portals, Object-Oriented Software Engineering, an d Software Systems Maintenance.

Dr. Poo serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Asia Pacific Software Engineering Conference (APSEC). In 1997 and 2002, Dr. Poo was invited by the Japanese Government and Fukuoka City to participate in a forum on “USA , K yushu and Asia International Exchange Project”.

Dr. Poo has also spoken in Knowledge Management Conferences in Singapore on topics such as “Creating a Workable Knowledge Classification System”, “Developing a Useable Taxonomy that Supports the Services offered by the Public Sector”, and "How Effective Web Search Can Strengthen Customer Relations".

Dr. Poo is the author of 5 books: “Object-Oriented Programming and Java”2e, Springer-Verlag, 2007; “Developing Systems Using J2EE”, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2004; "Learn to Program Enterprise JavaBeans 3.0", 2e, Thomson Learning, 2007; “Learn to Program Java”, e, Thomson Learning, 2006; "Learn to Program Java User Interface", Thomson Learning, 2006.

Dr. Poo is currently spearheading a large-scale project on building a Repository of Websites and contents structured with a Taxonomy and Metadata for the Singapore Education Sector. This project is funded by the National University of Singapo re.
