Project Description

This project is funded by Singapore Ministry of Education Academic Research Fund for three years 2013-2016.

Principle Investigator (PI): Tulika Mitra, National University of Singapore

The project aims to develop an end-to end framework, called Monsoon, for energy and thermal efficient computing in high-performance embedded systems. The key concept in our approach is to leverage on the inherent characteristics of many modern applications (e.g., media processing, recognition and data mining, machine learning) to tolerate imprecise and approximate solutions. We exploit this approximate nature of contemporary and future applications through context-dependent synergistic adaptation of the both the application and the architecture to achieve energy savings and improved thermal profile while meeting the quality of service (QoS) guarantees. In particular, we plan to develop compiler techniques and a runtime layer that can “shape” the computation workload so as to best suit the runtime scenario and the platform while still satisfying user perception. In parallel we would adapt the underlying architecture to match the requirements of the computation.
