ER2004 CALL FOR PAPERS
23rd International Conference on Conceptual Modeling
November 8-12, 2004, Shanghai, China

Mirror site at National University of Singapore
http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~er2004/
Scope of Conference
Conceptual modeling is fundamental to real world abstraction and can foster
communication between technology experts and those who would benefit from
the application of those technologies. It has become a major mechanism
for understanding and representing organizations, including new e-worlds,
and the information systems that support them. ER 2004 encompasses the
entire spectrum of conceptual modeling. It addresses research and practice
in areas such as theories of concepts and ontologies underlying conceptual
modeling, methods and tools for developing and communicating conceptual
models, and techniques for transforming conceptual models into effective
information system implementations.
The International Conference on Conceptual Modeling
provides a central forum for presenting and discussing current research
and applications in which conceptual modeling is the major emphasis. We
invite researchers and practitioners from both computer sci-ences and
management information systems. Reports of new ideas and approaches, useful
experiences and informative experiments are all welcome. Regular and industrial
papers are solicited along with proposals for workshops, tutorials, panel
sessions and posters.
Topics of Interest
The relevant topics of ER2004 include, but are not limited
to, the following specific examples:
- information modeling concepts, including ontologies
- ontological and conceptual correctness in modeling
- e-business and Web-based information systems
- mobile information systems
- the Semantic Web
- semistructured data and XML
- information and database integration
- information retrieval, organization, summarization, visualization
- design methodologies and their evaluation
- software engineering and tools
- reuse, patterns, and object oriented design
- quality and metrics
- conceptual change and schema evolution
- spatial, temporal, and multimedia aspects in conceptual models
- metadata, its interpretation and usage
- distance learning systems
- reverse engineering and reengineering
- knowledge management systems
- user interfaces
- groupware and workflow management

- advanced and cross-disciplinary applications
- web services
Submission Guidelines
The proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the LNCS series.
Springer-Verlag publishes a full-text electronic version of LNCS in parallel
with the printed version, so the electronic source of accepted papers
will be required (LaTeX 2e format is preferred). Authors of selected papers
will be invited to submit extended versions for possible publication
in Data & Knowledge Engineering.
Authors should submit original manuscripts via the ER2004
Web site, as PostScript or PDF files by 19 April 2004. Papers may not
exceed 5000 words. Use at least an 11-point font and no more than 20 double-spaced
pages. Typically published papers are 14 pages in LNCS format. Authors are encouraged
to submit papers in the LNCS format (http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html).
Best Paper Awards
The Prof. Kambayashi best paper award will be given to the best paper. A
separate Prof. Kambayashi best student paper award will be given to the best
student paper. Papers eligible for this award must have a (graduate or
undergraduate) student listed as the first author, and the
majority of the authors must be students. Such submissions must be marked as
student papers at the time of submission.
Industrial Papers
Please submit papers for the industry track to one of the Industrial Co-Chairs,
Philip S. Yu (psyu@us.ibm.com), Jian Pei (jianpei@cse.buffalo.edu) or Jiansheng Feng (fengjiansheng@baosight.com)
by 19 April 2004. We invite both full papers and short papers. Please
visit our Web site for full details.
Workshops
Workshops Co-Chairs are
|
, Katsumi Tanaka (ktanaka@i.kyoto-u.ac.jp) and Shan Wang (suang@public.bta.edu.cn). Please send workshop |
proposals
to either of the Co-Chairs by 1 March, 2004. For workshop information,
see the separate call for workshop proposals on our Web site.
Tutorials
Please submit tutorial proposals to one of the Tutorial Co-Chairs, Jianzhong
Li (lijz@mail.banner.com.cn) or Stefano Spaccapietra (Stefano.Spaccapietra@epfl.ch)
by 10 May 2004. Identify the pre-senter, the intended audience, and the
scope of the topic. Tutorials may be presented as a 90-minute tutorial
inside the conference, or as a half day (3 hour) or a full day (6 hour)
pre-conference tutorial. Suggested tutorial topics include, but are not
limited to: Semantic Web, Web knowledge management, and data mining process
mod-eling.
Panels
We solicit proposals for panel sessions related to the conference topics
about which there is controversy and thus a need for public discussion.
Please send panel proposals to one of the Panel Co-Chairs, Chin-Chen Chang
(ccc@cs.ccu.edu.tw) or Erich Neuhold (neuhold@ipsi.fhg.de) by 7 June 2004.
See our Web site for more detailed instructions.
Demonstrations and Posters
ER2004 provides a forum for ongoing work: poster reports on projects
in progress, demonstrations of alpha- and beta-versions of software tools
and products, invitations to cooperate on new project ideas, etc. These
should stimulate a highly interactive and future-oriented added value
to ER2004. Please send poster and demonstration proposals to the Demonstration
and Poster Chair, Mong-Li Lee (leeml@comp.nus.edu.sg) by 19 July 2004.
