Getting to Singapore

Singapore is a major air-hub and many airlines stop by Singapore's Changi International Airport.

From the Airport to Orchard Parade Hotel

The easiest way is to take a taxi from the airport to Orchard Parade Hotel. Any taxi driver will know where this hotel is. It should cost around SGD$15 (about US$10). Taxis accept Singapore dollars ONLY. So please change some local currencies before coming to Singapore or at Changi International Airport. Note that the exchange rate at the airport is generally not as good as those available downtown. Please note that there is a time-dependent airport surcharge as well as a peak-hour surcharge that may be imposed.

From the Airport to Prince George's Park Residence

Some of the students are staying on-campus in the Prince George's Park Residence. Again, the easiest way is to take a taxi. Ask the driver to go to "N.U.S." . It is a straightforward ride from the East Coast Parkway ("ECP") which connects directly with the Ayer Rajah Expressway ("AYE"). On AYE, take Exit number 8 (Buona Vista Exit) and turn left. For the last stretch of the journal, follow the map.

From the Orchard Parade Hotel to the Guild House (Conference Site)

There will be a free shuttle bus that ferry participants from Orchard Parade Hotel to the conference site every morning and evening. On Sunday, the bus will leave at 8.30am sharp. On all other days of the conference, it shall leave at 8am sharp. When you check in, please check with the front desk when the shuttle will be waiting. If you miss the bus, please take a taxi using the guidance given in the map. Please have your breakfast before coming as we will start immediately once the bus arrives at the conference site.

From Prince George's Residence to the Guild House

Take the NUS internal shuttle bus A2 and alight in car park 13 or 15. The Guild House is a stone-throw away. Please see the map for details.

If you drive

Please park at car park 15. Please see the map for details.

If you are taking public transport

Taxi is most convenient. If you are taking the subway, please take the East-West line towards Boon Lay and alight at Buona Vista Station (Station EW21 on the East-West line). After exiting the station, take the overhead bridge and cross the road to bus station B03 and take bus service 95 from there to campus. Once inside campus, alight and take the free internal shuttle bus A1. Please see the map for details.

Miscellaneous Tips

1. Dressing: The peak day time temperature is usually about 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) so suit-and-tie is reserved only for the most formal of occasion. On the other hand, shorts/bermudas and sandals are considered too informal, and in any case, a challenge in the normally 20 degrees Celsius indoor air conditioned room. We recommend a comfortable cotton shirt with collar, no tie, pants and shoes.

2. Umbrella: Singapore is a mere 1 degree north of the equator and right now we are in the middle of the year-end rainy season. We can go from glorious sunshine to the most heaviest drenching you will ever see in a matter of an hour. So always have an umbrella ready. You will notice that almost no one here seems to carry an umbrella but when it pours, suddenly every one has one. Don't be caught off guard.

3.. Food: Singaporeans are very proud of their cosmopolitan and fusion cuisines. You must try our laksa, satay, roti prata, nonya cooking, bak kut teh, and so much more.

4. Transportation:  For public transport, there are three subway (we call it "MRT" - "Mass Rapid Transit") lines serving the island. To take the subway, you will have to get to know the ez-Link contact-less card payment system. The bus system is complex and a little more challenging for first time tourists. We recommend taking taxis - one of the cheapest, most convenient and most comfortable around the round. Always insist paying by the meter when you take a taxi.

5. Tipping: None expected. A service charge of 10% is slapped on the bill for most restaurant.

6. GST: All purchases are subjected to a 5% Goods and Services Tax though some shops may include it in the prices of the merchandize. There is a refund system. Please refer to this link for details.

7. Personal safety: Singapore is one of the safest city in the world. But as the police would like to remind us: Low crime does not mean no crime. Be careful of pickpockets and petty thieves especially in crowded or "touristy" places.

8. Water: Our tap water adhere to the highest World Health Organization standards and is drinkable off the tap.

9. Power: 240 volts, 13 amp, British three-pin square plugs.

And make sure you take a stroll along Orchard Road to enjoy the Christmas lightings!
