I am currently a PhD student at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore.
I am fortunate to get the chance to work with A/P Kan Min Yen, who heads the Web Information Retrieval / Natural Language Processing Group (WING).
My research interests lie predominantly in improving natural language applications such as question-answering through the use of semantic approaches. A summary of the academic work I am involved in can be found in these pages.
I am currently very drawn to natural language processing (NLP) and its applications. Specifically, I am looking at improving the performance of Question-Answering (QA) systems.
QA aims to devise computer systems which are capable of answering questions posed in human languages like English. It encompasses interesting and challenging areas of work such as query analysis, document/passage retrieval, and answer generation. Current state-of-the-art approaches to QA are typically keyword-based systems, where important terms are extracted from a given query, expanded on, and subsequently used for document/passage retrieval. I am working on alternative approaches which go beyond syntactic understanding of text and which should allow us to build better QA systems.
As part of my research, I have developed an open-source QA system -- QANUS. QANUS is developed to serve as a framework to support rapid prototyping of QA systems, and in time to come serve as a verifiable, reproducible benchmark for QA systems.

One of the reasons why I started on my PhD program is to get the chance to teach. Personally I appreciate the importance of education and knowledge sharing.
Classes I have taught include :
- AY2009/2010, Sem 1
- AY2008/2009, Sem 2
