Reference Letters Page,
Leong Hon Wai, School of Computing, National University of Singapore
Students often ask me for reference letters.
So, this page is dedicated to those who wants letters from me.
I have started to put in the usual information you will need
to provide for me if you want me to write you a reference letter.
(However, I only write for those students whom I know quite well
personally and have to turn down those whom I do not know or
only know very casually.)
- Standard Resume Information (SRI):
The standard resume information usually found in any resume
plus information on your detailed results in NUS
(plus A/O levels if appropriate),
information on projects done and research work undertaken
(title, duration, and some brief descriptions and achievements),
ECA done, especially those during your time in NUS
(what, your role and responsibilities, your achievements and what
you have gained).
If you have graduated, please also include employment record with
job responsibilities.
- Ambition/Job Preferences Information (JPI):
If you are applying for a job, then it will be very useful to have
some indication of your job preferences, your ambition (short,
intermediate, and long term), and perhaps areas of strength.
These information will be useful for me.
- Your Own Reference Letter (YORL):
Usually, to help me with the writing of your reference letter,
I will ask that you write yourself a reference letter to "sell yourself"
since you know yourself best. I will use this letter as a starting point.
(If you have worked before, also say something about your previous
job experiences.)
Note: Reference letters are usually confidential and so are
usually released only to the recipients, and
not to the students.
