UIT 2201: Computer Science & the I.T. Revolution
<< Shamir's Dossier >>
-~ The Frequently Given Answers (FGA)~-
1) What is your rank, name and I/C number?
- I like to consider myself as a liberated civilian, so calling me Mr. would be fine actually.
- My full name is Muhammad Shamir Bin Abdul Rahim Bin Jaafar Bin -i-can't-remember-my-great-grandfather's name-
- Hmm.. I/C number's a sensitive topic, and my momma told me not to give it freely to strangers.. and you might be a stranger..
2) What is your favourite past-time?
- Volunteering to do stuff like these? Just doing my part for the community.. right on brudder :)
3) Do you have a picture of yourself?
4) No,seriously?
- Fine, for the love of computer science...
- This was me back in those suicide-bombing days.. figured my career prospects weren't too good, so I resigned.
5) Why I am taking UIT 2201 and what I hope to learn.
- Figured I should include this section too, especially now that it's in the other sample page..
- Frankly speaking, before I entered NUS, I couldn't decide between majoring in Computer Engineering (SOC or ENG) or Life Sciences, as I like both fields equally.. (or so I thought at that time anyway)
- So here I am trying to figure out what I missed.. and hopefully not regret the path I have chosen.. hahahh.. (of course, technically, its still our pregorative as USP students to switch majors right? nevermind..)
- I'm also doing UIT 2203 - Digital Information Systems & Society (by A/P Chris Mendyis), which seems to focus more on the 'hardware' part of IT.. so hopefully, I can balance it with learning the 'software' part from this course.. or fail both modules trying..
6) What else dya think you should be included in this page?
- I've been looking for a version of 'Motorcycle Diaries' with sub-titles for quite some time now.. any IT samaritans out there? or does anyone know Spanish well?
- There used to be a time when 'guestbooks', 'web clocks' and 'visitor-counters' were all the craze.. more 'savvy' sites had lotsa memory-draining frames and useless ICQ portals too..
- Apparently however, that's all passe.. blogging is all the craze now.. cos there's an exhibitionist in all of us? whatever mans.
7) You crazy? Don't you know file-sharing is punishable by jail now?
- Alright fine, maybe some links then..
- This' a fine example of the pervasiveness of computing- she's not crazy, she's just a victim of the IT revolution..!
- This is extremely useful, for those who like me, don't like to be contactable by a bar-code..
so for eg. my NUS email is Shamir@nus.edu.sg
- NUS Bioinformatics Centre.. there's actually a server in Science faculty which hosts these websites & web-based programs.. its supposed to be very powerful, cos it can annotate DNA sequences faster than you can say 'google'..
but it's no joke trying to process one whole semester's worth of Life Sci students sending 9MB of DNA code each.. hehehh.. ouch..
- NUS Muslim Society:- we actually pay a yearly subscription for this domain name.. designed completely by SOC undergrads! Co-run by yours truly :)
Free Web Hosting services:
They're like mushrooms nowadays- you can find a few dozen from a Google-search, but here're some reasonably reliable servers all the same.
Since most of us would have a Yahoo! account.. this should be the most convenient.. still one of the most popular now- Geocities!
[15MB free space]
Fortunecity: - its ad-supported, like all good free-webhosting services..
quite decent I suppose.. [25MB free space]
Lycos' Tripod webhosting:- used to be very popular.. [50MB free space]
www.50megs.com: - offers 50MB of space.. no duh! [50MB free space]
This actually a URL-redirecting service- very useful if you want a catchy website address but don't have the resources ($$$) to register a domain name.
8) What program did you use to write this page?
- Mostly Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 now.. cos I've gotten lost in all them tags in Notepad.. hahahh..
- Useful tip: I like to learn new tags by looking at the html code of nicely-designed web-pages..
- In Internet Explorer, click View -> Source.
- For pages with frames, click on a frame to make it the 'active page' before viewing the html format.
