The LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Invention System Kit enables student to build a programmable robot with an assortment of LEGO pieces that snap, slide, and click into place.

The Robotics Invention System set includes the RCX, two motors, three sensors, a USB-based IR tower, RIS 2.0 software, and about 700 assorted LEGO pieces.

Programs for the RCX are created in a pc (host computer), then downloaded to the RCX.  The RCX can then run these programs on its own without further intervention from the pc.

The software included, can be used to write programs in RCX code, which is an easy-to-use, graphical programming environment.  Another computer language, Not Quite C (NQC) is a more traditional, text-based computer language can also be used to program the RCX.
