MMM'93 |
MMM'93 provides a forum to discuss
the efficient representation, processing, interaction, integration and
retrieval of multimedia information. The theme of the conference is modeling.
In particular, MMM'93 will concentrate on common modeling frameworks for integrating
the diverse fields of visual information (graphics, image and video) and audio
information (speech, music and sound effects). MMM'93 will be held on November
9-12, 1993. Future MMM conferences are planned for November 1995 and 1997.
CONFERENCE CHAIR'S MESSAGE
|
The Department of
Information Systems and Computer Science, National University of
Singapore, has the honour of acting as the main organizer for the International
Conference on Multi-Media Modeling (MMM), perhaps the very first conference on
this exciting new area of research and development around the world. Following
closely upon the conferences on Geographic Information Systems and Large
Spatial Databases held here in June, MMM will further enhance the visibility of
the Department before a regional and international audience.
As Multi-Media systems have reached a certain level
of maturity and many commercial products are already available, rigorous and
well verified methods for the modeling of Multi-Media information will come
into high demand. We hope this conference will go some way towards establishing
the current stage of knowledge in this field, heighten awareness of the need
for further research, and generate exchanges of ideas on new developments and
methodologies.

Tutorial A: 9 November (Tue): 0900-1230
Title:
Virtual Reality and Multimedia for Animation
Instructor: Prof Daniel Thalmann (Swiss
Federal Inst. of Technology, Switzerland)
In
this tutorial, we review the impact of VR and multimedia devices and techniques
on the animation process. We will explain the most important techniques of
animation and how 3D interaction and multi-modal interfaces could improve the
design of animation sequences. The impact on human animation will be emphasized.
Tutorial B: 9 November (Tue): 1400-1730
Title:
MPEG Standard
Instructor: Dr Guo-Jun Lu (National
Uni. of Singapore, Singapore)
MPEG
is a digital video standard for multimedia applications. This tutorial will
discuss the principle and techniques used in MPEG for video compression. Topics
to be covered include: MPEG overview; principle of video compression;
compression techniques used in MPEG; applications and current products; and
future development (MPEG II).
Tutorial C:
10 November (Wed): 0900-1230
Title:
Modeling for Virtual Reality
Instructor: Prof Tosiyasu L. Kunii
(Uni. of Aizu, Japan)
Creating virtual worlds inside the
computers so that human beings can conceptually identify the virtual and real
worlds is one of the ultimate goals of multimedia. It requires a powerful
abstraction mechanism of virtual worlds, particularly of complex shapes. This
tutorial focuses on how to establish powerful models to handle virtual visual
reality. Examples include wide variety of virtual worlds such as sports expert
systems, simulation of rain forest growth, and topographical guiding system.
Tutorial D:
10 November (Wed): 1400-1730
Title:
Spatial and Visual Databases
Instructor: Dr Beng-Chin Ooi (National
Uni. of Singapore, Singapore)
In
this tutorial, we examine the requirements for visual applications from the
database backend. Conventional database systems were not designed to handle
these new applications. Certain areas need to be re-addressed. We will cover
topics such as query languages, indexing mechanisms, storage structures and
query processing. More coverage will be given to spatial databases, which are
collections of raster, vector, and alphanumeric data.
