NUS Grammar Checker

Correct English grammar usage is a key component of a well written English essay or report. Good written communication is not only important to students learning English, but also to working professionals.

Understanding the challenge of learning English, researchers from the Natural Language Processing (NLP) Group in the Department of Computer Science at the National University of Singapore have developed novel NLP technology to build a state-of-the-art grammar checker. The software detects and corrects a subset of grammatical errors in English essays written by learners of English. It incorporates grammar rules, and exploits statistics from very large text corpora to prefer fluent corrected sentences. The software is targeted mainly at the education market. It helps English learners in essay writing.

The NUS grammar checker has the following key features:

  1. Grammar checking. Our software identifies and proposes corrections to grammatical mistakes in an English text. As a learning tool, it also shows sample usage by displaying sentences (retrieved from a large text corpus) that are most similar to the original sentence near the detected error and to the corrected sentence near the suggested correction.
  2. One-stop platform. It is a platform for the entire essay management process and stores your essays in one place for ease of access.
  3. Mobile learning. You can access your essays any time, anywhere.
