ABOUT ME

Dr. Pan Shan Ling (Shan L Pan) is an Associate Professor and the Deputy Head of the Department of Information Systems, School of Computing at the National University of Singapore. He is also the academic director of the Strategic Technology Management Institute (STMI- http://stmi.nus.edu.sg/). He received his MBA degree from the University of Texas (UTSA), MA degree from the University of London (SOAS), and Ph.D degree in Industrial and Business Studies (Operational Research and Systems) from University of Warwick, UK.

MY RESEARCH

Dr. Pan's primary research focuses on the recursive interaction of organizations and information technology (enterprise systems), with particular emphasis on issues related to work practices, cultures and structures from a strategic perspective. Specifically, he is interested in understanding the complex issues related to the adoption, implementation and use of enterprise systems within organizations. He is also interested in understanding the business models and innovation of eCommerce companies. His inter-disciplinary research and education has been sponsored by multiple grants from the Ministry of Education, Workforce Development Agency and Electronic Government Leadership Centre, Singapore.

Dr. Pan has developed a keen interest in the IT and eCommerce industry of China, especially on how some of the best practices can enrich our understanding of IT management, business models and innovation. In the last 5 years, he has conducted more than a dozen of in-depth studies with both State-owned enterprises and Privately-owned organizations in China. Some of these enterprises include Alibaba.com, China Mobile, COFCO, Haier, Tencent, NeuSoft, SAP China, Jeanwest, XuGong Group, Damai.com; Shanghai Tobacco, and 360buy.com. The main objective of these studies is to understand issues related to the fluidness and fluidity of Chinese organizations. Concepts such as ambidexterity, agility, bricolage, emulation , polymorphism, embeddedness, collectivism, acculturation are deemed to be key sources of the Chinese innovation.

Dr. Pan's emerging research interest is in the area of the role of ICT-enabled design thinking in Social Innovation. Design thinking is inherently human centered. In this stream of research, we are interested in studying how design thinking, through the use of information communications technology, can be employed in the developing world to address the needs of people who consume a product or service and the infrastructure that enables it.

Dr. Pan's published more than 70 journal papers and most of them have appeared in Information Systems Research (ISR); MISQ Executive (MISQE); IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (IEEE SMC); IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (IEEE TOEM); IEEE Transactions on IT in Biomedicine (IEEE T-ITB); Journal of the American Society for Information Systems and Technology (JASIST); Journal of Academy of Marketing Science (JAMS); European Journal of Operations Research (EJOR); European Management Journal (EMJ); Journal Of Operational Research Study (JORS); Communications of ACM (CACM); Information and Organization (I&O); Journal of Strategic Information Systems (JSIS); Information System Journal (ISJ); Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce (JOCEC); European Journal of Information Systems (EJIS); Decision Support Systems (DSS); International Journal of Information Management (IJIM); The DATABASE for Advances in Information Systems (DATABASE); OMEGA: International Journal of Management Science (OMEGA); Journal of Information and Knowledge Management (JIKM); Management Learning (ML); Journal of Global Information Systems (JGIM); Academy of Management Annual Meeting (AOM) and International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS).

Dr. Pan is an Associate Editor of the MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Information and Management, European Journal of Information Systems, Communications of the AIS, and Electronic Commerce Research and Application.

Dr. Pan's current citation (Google Scholar: December 7, 2012) is 3323  with a h-index of 30  and an i-index of 58.

TEACHING AND INDUSTRY ACTIVITY

Dr. Pan has written more than 40 teaching cases till date. In order to share his teaching cases with colleagues and students worldwide, he has set up an Asian IT Case Series (AITCS).

AITCS (http://aitcs.nus.edu.sg/) is a web-based publication of teaching cases centered around IT management and based on rigorous research conducted with real Asian firms and government agencies. The dual mission of this series is to promote the best practices of Asian IT management and to provide teaching and learning materials to educators, students and practitioners around the world, particularly to Asian institutions with limited teaching resources.

Dr. Pan was a winner of the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (2003 and 2006) and NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award (2004 and 2009). His teaching interests include Business analysis, E-government, Knowledge Management Systems and Organizations, Enterprise Systems, and Qualitative Research Methods.

Dr. Pan is active in providing executive training and consultancy to both private and non-profit organizations on strategic issues of business analysis, innovation, knowledge management, enterprise systems and e-government. As an executive trainer, Dr. Pan has conducted a series of three-day workshops for both corporate organizations and government agencies. Some of his clients include DBS, Siemens Medical, NTUC, Bank of China, IDA, Ministry of Finance, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and The Pacific (UNESCAP) of the United Nations.

In one of his consultancy projects, he was commissioned to conduct a market research on China's ERP project. The project involves conducting a six-month study on various ERP vendors that are operating in China. He also consulted for the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and The Pacific (UNESCAP) of the United Nations (UN) where he lead a three-day workshop and provided consultancies on knowledge management in international trade negotiation. He was also the resource-person (consultant) for Knowledge Management in a two-day meeting on Knowledge Management for open Source Software organized by Economic and Social Commission for Asia and The Pacific (UNESCAP) of the United Nations (UN).
