Dr Pung started his research in computer networks. His early works in the 80s were in network protocols for LANs and routing. He then established a Distributed Multimedia Systems laboratory in early 90, where he conducted research in distributed systems and multimedia networking, working on topics such as multicasting, programmable ATM networking, optical networking and quality of service of routing. 

 

Research

Dr Pung has published more than 140 papers in journals and conferences. Since 2003, he moved on to work in mobile and pervasive computing and established the Networks Systems and Services Laboratory. His main research focus has since been in Service Oriented Systems architecture and context aware pervasive computing. He worked in context modeling and reasoning using ontology and semantic web languages; Together with his student Gu Tao, they developed the SOCAM middleware, and further their research in Information Retrieval in Schema-based P2P Systems using One-dimensional Semantic Space. With a major grant from A*Star in 2006, he developed a new context aware middleware known as Coalition, which is capable of operating over large number of heterogeneous context spaces (see figure on the right). He is currently working toward a pervasive smart campus.
