The Rose

I watch your petals pale, day to day,
the pleasant pink washed to the brim,
the darkened blush tainted with withering brown,
the once firm layers now meek and wrinkled,
but somehow, beautiful still.

I have loved you when you were fresh,
inhaled your scent from time to time,
wetted the cotton at the base of your stem,
to prolong your youthfulness just a little bit more,
knowing nature wouldn't let you go.

I stopped sniffing your blossom a few days ago,
watched as you began to deteriorate little by little,
your crown sinking inelegantly, weighing on your calyx,
that would have bowed were it not for the holding plastic,
the day nearing when I would throw you away.

Yet for over a week you've been a lovely company,
an adorning presence in my room, longer than I thought you'd last,
serving your charms as a treat for the senses,
your freshness a lifting for the weary spirit,
your passing beauty a reminder of mortality.
