The Jena University Language and Information Engineering (JULIE) Lab at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität in Jena, Germany, invites applications for a research position (at doctoral and post-doc level) in the field of information extraction and text mining (major application areas are biology and medicine). The position has a minimum duration of three years and can be filled immediately. The salary is approx. 40,000 Euros/year, according to German public service pay scale.

Our work focuses on developing NLP methods for extracting biomedical information from online literature and databases and building biomedical knowledge bases and ontologies on the basis of automatic text analysis.

Skills in one or more of the following areas are required: text mining, information extraction, named entity recognition, and/or ontology development. Knowledge/Experience in Machine Learning applied to NLP is essential. The applicant should have programming skills in Java and Perl as well as experience with XML. S/he should be able to acquire relevant biomedical background knowledge during the duration of the project. The applicant has a degree either in computational linguistics with a focus on machine learning or in computer science with a reasonable NLP background.

Applicants should either be fluent in German or in English. Applicants without German language competence are encouraged to acquire this skill on the job.
